I watch it once a month...

This is one of my favorite movies of all time. Ever since it came out on DVD, I watch it probably once a month. No film in history recreates the claustrophobic, foggy streets of London better. The sound track and audio cues (Westnister Chimes, police whistles, dogs barking in the background, etc) also add to the sense of realism and amazing atmosphere.

Add to that the great performances and the intriguing (though implausible) story, and it ranks up there as great entertainment for me. I often watch its successor, From Hell, with this one as a double bill.

I agree, although I prefer this to From Hell (which is obviously bigger budget, but I find Heather Graham totally out of place). They make a good double bill though! There is something about the atmosphere that Murder by Decree evokes that still gives me the shivers in all those darkened foggy streets. The sets, music, lighting and camera work really help. They just don't seem to craft films like this anymore.

Mmm, I think the acting is better in this one, but I do love the music score for "From Hell" (in the context of the movie, that is ... I'm not about to put it on my iPod !).

But I agree with you, ajsc74, about Heather Graham. She's not a bad actress, but she didn't really get a feel for being either from East London or from the time in history. I guess they just felt they needed a recognisable face among the women for the blokes in American audiences to perve at. Bit of a pity, because I really thought the other women did much better jobs of fleshing out their parts and bringing them to life.

Why I like "Murder by Decree" so much is for the atmosphere Bob Clarke managed to create -- period movies that capture a real sense of the period as effortlessly as this one does aren't all that common -- and for the way he turned the plotlines of both the real-life Ripper murders and the fictional royal marriage and Masonic plot into what feels like a real Sherlock Holmes story.

You might very well think that. I couldn't possibly comment.

If you enjoy atmospheric, chilling movies evolving around an investigator; Angel Heart (1987) is an absolute must! That's my favourite movie, and this film is in my top ten also. I'd really advise you people to watch Angel Heart, it's Mickey Rourke's finest moment as a private investigator. Watch the film and be shocked by the many surprises and twists in the plotline! It's the most intricate film I've ever seen, so listen very carefully what each character says, so you can reconstruct what happened, whilst Rourke is investigating. It's set in the 50's, just so you know.

I saw this movie on a submarine back in 1979, and had never heard of it! The movie got almost no publicity and so went to the graveyard of all films...the Armed Forces Library! When I saw the film, I had been awake for over 24 hours and found the film both chilling and breath-taking! It was the best movie I saw in 1979 - bar none!

You need to get out more ... perhaps on a foggy night.

But you ARE Blanche ... and I AM.

I wonder if there was any discussion about another Holmes movie with Plummer and Mason? They were terrific together in this movie.

As an interesting side note, James Mason's son married the Go-Go's singer Belinda Carlise in the late 1980's. They are still together.

couldn't have agreed more ...the dripping atmosphere that adds to the realism always does it for me..wished they had more movies with this kind of dripping atmosphere...almost like a time capsule back in time
