I found the 2nd half more interesting than the 1st half

The common criticism is "It all went nicely until they got to outer space".

Personally, I enjoyed the space station scenes. They had suspense, were colorful, a nice climax and the CGI was very well done. And it was UNIQUE.

The issue I had was with the first 70 minutes of the movie which just adheres the predictable Bond formula. Bond meets the girl, escapes a trap, gets gadgets from Q, etc.

Don't think there was CGI in 1979. And the space fight scenes looked pretty terrible.

I love the whole film. Even just watching it recently the space sequences were pretty good and the battle was actually very frantic and all of this was before the huge space battles of Empire Strikes Back or Return Of The Jedi.

Some great model work and even the effect of the earth slowly rotating was great. It's dated FX for sure but in context they were amazing for the time.

Probably my favourite Moore era Bond film!

I wonder if it'd be possible to make a movie with the same kind of tech they used back then. How did they do the 'laser' effects and text credits and such - I've always wondered.

Like, how did they do 'The Terminator (1984)' logo in the intro, with those flashy 'glint' effects and all without using computers in some way? (Of course 1984 is long way from 1979, but I always wonder about these things).

In the very olden days, I think they used to 'draw' things straight onto the film itself, like 'scratching the film' to create 'lightning' effects, for example. But there must have been some other ingenious methods. Reading how they did the explosion in some Star Trek movie was quite fantastic; they actually rigged an explosion to happen in the roof of some darkened hall, and put a high-speed camera on the floor, pointing up, then just filmed the whole thing - the particles falling on the floor and towards the camera would really look epic, and they did.

I am sure there were many effect geniuses even back in 1979 that were involved in how they did the effects, so perhaps SOME kind of computer systems might have been used - maybe just not straight computer-rendered graphics per se.

The second half was quite something, and they really stepped up the science fiction aspect of the 007 series here.

You don't like Bond films being Bond films eh?

The first half is great. They captured the sense of grandiosity nicely (I especially love John Barry's score). And Bond is actually doing some spying in this one (gasp!).

The fight with the Asian Dude along with the scene where BOND is trapped on that simulator going around in circles at unfathomable speeds is some of the Best

Some real high quality acting by Sir Roger playing at being disoriented when he gets out of that...

Pure Rogertainment!
