It's curious that Meatballs a raunchy teen comedy was nominated for a slew of Genie awards (Canada's Oscar) and won a handful. Normally comedies rarely win anything so it's interesting to know that Meatballs is an award winning film.
shareIt was a Canadian movie that was very successful and well received. It seems appropriate that Canadians should be proud of it, and want to support and promote it, however they could.

Well there's that and also the fact that English Canada is not particularly prolific at producing films that meet with mainstream success, so any time there is something that is a hit, it gets lavished with Genie noms.

I agree......they get so full of themselves sometimes, it's just a bit sickening.
Drama, Action, Horror, Thriller, Comedy........it shouldn't matter. A good film, is a good film.

Looking at the nominees list for that year I don’t think there was much competition. The Genies are strictly for Canadian productions only so I guess they select from whatever is available. The Best Film winner for that year was a horror movie, The Changeling.
