Spaz

Europeans are much more offended than are Americans at the idea of calling someone "Spaz".

reply

Only the Leftists of Europe are.

Do you know what the definition of "politically correct" is? It is that which offends the Left.

Sorry to get so political, but I can't stand the over-sensitivity to something as innocuous as "spaz."

reply

In Europe (or the UK at least) the word "spastic" is still frequently used to describe people with illnesses such as cerebral palsy which cause jerking movements of their bodies and limbs, so to call somebody a spaz is seen as making fun of such people in a cruel fashion.

I'm sure the origins of the term "spaz" in North America are the same but those connections to spastic diplegia, etc. have fallen by the wayside and it's really just used as a gentle pejorative for "nerds" and "geeks" nowadays.

So, please, before wheeling out the tired, old "politically correct" argument make sure you have your facts correct first.

Did anyone else think Spaz was totally cute? I know he was supposed to be a spaz, and they dorked him up with the glasses and the horrible non-matching clothes, but he was really the best looking guy at camp.

No? Just me, then.

reply

He was totally cute.
