does anyone who discovered it today actually like it?

I saw this film in its entirety for the first time last year after having tried a couple times in the past, only to wound up turning it off out of sheer boredom. After having seen the entire film, my thoughts on it remained the same, it sucked. It's slow, boring, and very little happens.

And I'm not alone in this, many younger people I've talked to seem to find this film a bore. It's not for a lack of appreciation of older films either, as those same people tend to usually like The Road Warrior much more (I myself, included). In fact, I feel like I haven't actually heard anyone say they like it if they didn't already grow up with it.

So just out of curiosity, and I mean no disrespect to those who do like it, how many of you saw it for the first time in recent years and actually enjoyed it?

The Road Warrior is one of my favourite movies, I think its a masterpiece and so is Fury Road. I really like MM3 too. BUT I just cant get into this one, I've seen it two times and it really is a rather boring movie.

I saw the Road Warrior and Beyond Thunderdome as a kid in the mid 90's and this one when I was about 25 (9 years ago). For a long time back then I didnt even know that this one existed. Maybe if I had seen this at the same time when I saw MM2 and MM3 I would have enjoyed it more. But what I remember from it it wasnt very good and it didnt really feel like a Mad Max movie.

I've never been a big fan of this movie but I do like the rest of the movies in the series. I did see both The Road Warrior and Thunderdome before this one so maybe that had something to do with it, but I do agree that this one isn't as engaging, and I'm not a young person as I was alive when this came out.

Mad Max was the platform whence better movies were launched.

I hate to put it this way but.... it's an Australian film. Check out some of the other films within 5-10 years of Mad Max and you'll understand why this was such a big deal for them.

Maybe someone can recommend an 1980ish film from Australia that is really great but I can't think of one. And I'm really not an action film kind of viewer so please don't take this as "it didn't have enough explosions and CGI for me" kind of post.

But overall I like Mad Max for what it is but it's not what most people expect if they see RoadWarrior first.

Crocodile Dundee.

reply

Yeah, I can give you that one. It seemed to be more Americanized for an Australian film but it's a valid Australian film. I never knew the director was an Aussie until I just read a bit about it. Good call.

Wake In Fright. Watch it. Came out in the early 70s, and it's a great Australian crime/ thriller.

reply

I saw Wake in Fright a couple of years ago and I loved it. Great film in my book.

reply

Well I don't fit your criteria exactly but I did hate this movie when I was a kid. I didn't grow to love it till my late 20s.

This was kind of an out of nowhere Indie film when it came out, but it got a cult following that led to the later films and launched Mel Gibson as an action hero.

reply

Yeah... thanks for the film history lesson, Martin Scorsese. Now tell me, what do you think about it?

What bridge did I stumble under? 5 month old post and you respond within seconds?

reply

I just happened to be here as you were typing it. Nothing weird or out of the norm. LOL. Listen, I apologize if I sounded rude, but I'd really like to hear your opinion of the film instead.

reply

Ok, fair enough. I am rewatching it now. It’s been a few years so I will come back and share my thoughts. So far, it seems very ‘70s campy. I can see why it doesn’t play well with modern audiences.

It was a new and exciting thing back then ... like the Ford Model T was, better cars are available these days

reply

Yeah... This is a flawed comparison. Technology and art don't evolve in the same way. Some sculptures or paintings which are many hundred years old a timeless and still considered masterpieces today. While cars are evolving to be faster, stronger, more resistant and, supposedly, have longer lives (I know... this case is REALLY debatable).

Of course music, movies and plays age and evolve, but there are still timeless classics which set some standards which can still be viewed decades later without losing their efficiency, while a car requires a LOT of care if you want to keep it.

And when comes the times a new one, of course you'll want the latest model possible which will be more performant. A movie, however, can pass the test of time by itself.

Sorry if I came up as arrogant or even (highly possibly) a bit off-topic. I didn't have much sleep in the last few days lol.

Annnndddd I just responded to a deleted user... and now I'm talking to myself. XD Sleep time...

I watched this movie for the first time this past weekend and I think the first 1/2 of the movie was terrible, made no sense, just a bunch of idiots crashing and killing people. I think the point where it's Max and his woman and kid and beyond that then it got interesting to me and I liked all that part to the end.

reply

DarkOneX I liked the entire thing from beginning to end.

I saw it awhile ago, but still in the "modern" era (ie: long after 1979). I dug it.
