Why do Max let his wife alone even though it's not safe?

The Doctors give the impression that she won't survive, but intended to lie to Max that she may live.

"He's dusted, busted and disgusted, but he's ok"

I assume you mean going to get ice cream and going down to the beach alone.....I guess they were in what they thought was still a fairly safe part of the country.
