The Gang's knowledge of Max

At the start of the film, Fifi says to Max that 'word is they're out to get ya' but did the Gang have a clear description of Max and who they were looking for?

Later on towards the end of the film when Toecutter asks the Mechanic 'who are they'? Toecutter and the Gang follow Max and Family to May's Farm. Did the Gang just think they were randomly targeting more victims or did they actually know it was Max- who actually caused/accidently caused? Nightrider's death?

I read some random plotline on the back cover of my old 1990's VHS and it said 'chance brings Max and his family into conflict with the psychotic Toecutter and his gang'.

So my point is was the encounter with the gang just pure coincidence?

Sorry people but this has just always bugged me.

i'm certain it was coincidence. there's no way the gang knew Max was in the area. i'm sure the gang just put it out there they were going to get the cop who did him in. i'm sure Goose and the others bragged about how it was Max who was responsible for taking out the Nite Rider, like Goose does with Johnny the Boy.

"He's dusted, busted and disgusted, but he's ok"

The policemen, as they are in today's world, may be known to the gang from previous dealings; arrests and court proceedings among their circle of friends etc.

That's probably how they knew it was Max specifically who'd chased Nightrider to death, but the holiday incident was unrelated. Yes, pure coincidence.

All Toecutter knew is he'd been clocked in the 'nads by a pretty woman in a red panel van and he wanted his own back.

Who's to say how the gang found them, but they've got nothing better to do so why not crawl around the area ("North, mbaybe") until they spot said car.

It's unlikely they'd have even known she was a policeman's wife until they heard it on the news or through the grapevine. I'm guessing they knew what was happening and why when Max started coming after them.

...then whoa, differences...

After Max starts picking off the bikers, we see Toe Cutter at the mechanic shop again and 2 pictures fall out of the helmet. One of Max, and one of his wife and kid. Once he picks them up, he realises who Max is and why he's going after the crew.

I think the second one was actually a picture of goose. The guy in it looked blonde. It was showing toecutter the people Max was getting vengeance for.

Toecutter was a friend or family with the crazy car driver in the beginning of the movie, which max stops and "kills" and I got the impression that they asked around in the town when he visited the nightriders casket who got him killed and right there they got the knowledge of Max...I could be wrong though.

~If the realistic details fails, the movie fails~

At the beginning of the film, just after Nightrider has been killed, there's a news item on the TV that Max and Jessie are watching about the incident; Jessie actually says to Max "You made the news again." I imagine that's where Toecutter and his gang first found out the identity of the MFP officer who did their friend in.

When the gang catch up to Max and Jessie after the incident at the beach, Toecutter calls her by name. How could he know that, if he hadn't maybe done a little digging after what happened?
