comparisons to alice doesn't live here anymore

I noticed that there are several similarities to the Scorsese film. Which movie do you think is better?

both are great, but i would go with luna.

That's an interesting comparison. I think I prefer La Luna, too, although it's a more flawed work I think it's more probing. Alice is more conventional. Both films seem to endorse a family happy ending, which is a little strange considering the time (Burstyn ends up with Kristofferson, right? It's been a while).

What on earth makes them comparable? Widowed mother with young son? Beyond that, I just can't see any parallels. Total apples & oranges.

Apples and Oranges Indeed.

The mother-son relationships in both are prickly, argumentative, full of love/hate overtures. But, whereas "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore" shows how Alice and son Tommy were two sides of the same coin, Luna and her son are disconnected on matters of the heart. Scorsese is absolutely grounded in a salty, earthy reality, but don't look for that anywhere in "La Luna". This one is like a balloon in the wind--constantly going up, but whipped around in the breeze.

Why is a happy ending always looked at as shallow? Now I'm not exactly sure what you meant by bringing it up but it's always funny to me. Sometimes people are happy and film can depict that.
