This movie has a strange sense of humor

There were several parts throughout the film that had me laughing. Roberto Benigni's small part, the absurdity of the death of Fred Gwynn's character, and The Bee Gees' Night Fever scene, "I have to take a wicked piss" then shoves the Italian gal into a random room... many more, too!

Did anyone else feel this way? At times it was distracting from the rather heavy story. It must have been intentional of course , (Bertolucci is no dummy) but what a strange thing to do in this movie. I can't help but feel as though the rather jarring swings between serious and surreally light take away from the film as a whole.

I liked Luna okay enough; it has been very thought provoking since I finally watched it (Hooray and Thank You to Kino Lorber for making it available !!) BUT Luna has a few imperfections and oddities that have rendered it to be a most
interesting film... both good and bad ?
