Extraordinary film, should be on DVD....

I just saw this film at a Bertolucci retrospective at Museum of Modern Art in NYC, and it was extraordinary. Visually, it's one of Bertolucci's most sumptuous looking films. The cinematography should have won an Oscar (it was shot by the great Vittorio Storario). I don't know why it has never made it to home video. It's never been on VHS, Beta, laserdisc, or DVD (at least not in North America). It was financed and released by 20th Century Fox. Maybe Criterion should put this one out.

It's never been released on home video in the US because it's terrible! Bertolucci's worst film by a country mile.

Jill Clayburgh: "Here, let me help you..."

Hey Jill, it's not a cow udder. She was a trooper to let him suck on her tit and masturbate him when he was jonesin', though.

You're talking about one scene and taking it out of context.

the film is masterful.

reply

Sweetheart, in what context would a scene where someone's son tries takes a piss in front of his mother and she reaches down and grabs his pecker as if to magically draw out urine like a beer tap be "masterful"?

You want more ridiculous scenes? How about near the end when he and his mother are laying on the bed, they start making out, and then he announces that he wants to lick her face, he then licks her face, she moans, and then he starts choking her.

The film does nothing right. The themes: how teenagers handle suicide, drug use, and incest amount to nothing more than bourgeois self-victimization and lechery. On top of that, it looks like it was filmed with honey slathered over the lens, the audio sounds like it's coming out of a Victrola and every person in the film can't act, with the exception of Jilly who gratuitously overacts.

There isn't a single redeeming quality to this film except for the unintentional laughter it provides. If you thought this was a masterpiece, I want you to introduce me to your Ketamine dealer, stat.

I've repeatedly suggested the film to Criterion over several years, with no results.

BUT...see the good news I've just put on the "DVD Copies of La Luna" thread here!

reply

So far, Kino Lorber hasn't posted anything about an exact release date. I'm guessing in November or December. Or maybe even early next year.
