Does anyone know...I saw a version when I was a kid...under 10 i am sure, that started as live action...as soon as they went into Narnia, the film turned to animation, and then back to live action at the end...I have looked for years and no one i talk to seems to remember it or know which version it is or if its even available...does anyone know?? Thanks!
shareWell, I know there is the BBC "Narnia" trilogy from the late 1980's that was mostly live action all the way through, but did have a lot of animated creatures in it. If this is the one you mean it is available as a box set or as three individual DVDs usually around thirty bucks. Hope this helps.
shareThank you for your resply, but no..thats not it...it was one feature length film..that was live action normal movie in the beginning until they went through the wardrobe...as soon as they crossed over it was animated...then when they came back through at the end, it was back to regular 35mm film...NO one knows which one i mean...we saw it in grade school and it used to be on the telly all the time when i was a kid...but thanks anyway!

I remember an animatade series from when I was a kid. I guess it would have aired about 20 years ago in Sweden. Can't remember it having live action in it, but I can't say for sure it didn't. Thing is I remember it as a series, not a one feature length film. Also, the illustration on this side doen't match with my remeberance of what it looked like (Aslan beeing my clearest memory).
Don't know if this might be the same thing you remember, if it isn't I'd really like it if someone could tell me what it is I remember cause I can't find it anywhere.
The animation on the box is not the same as the animation in the movie - I have the VHS at home, and have often wondered why they don't match. This 1979 version is the animated one you remember from TV. In the US, it used to air every year around Easter - of course, THAT doesn't happen anymore, but my kids and I watch the video all the time.
I am very hopeful regarding the new, live-action film. The word is that after the wildly successful Passion of the Christ, the studio decided to make a faithful version of the movie and market it to church-groups, much as Mel Gibson did. The fact that this is also a great action story, much like Lewis' friend Tolkien's LOTR stories, will draw in the non-Christian viewers. SO, they say they're sticking to the novel.

But does this one have live action in the beginning and end as I remember? The one i am looking for has film in the beginning before they head into the wardrobe and then at the end as they return...so hard to figure this out!!
shareI vaguely remember this. I too remember a version of the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe AND AT LEAST ONE OTHER of the Chronicles of Narnia stories which had live footage at the beginning, but then in Narnia its animated. This was something I remember seeing when my family got our first color TV for the Den way back in the late 70's. I have no idea where to find them, but your memory isn't failing you the film you are talking about did exist.

There was a 70s film of "The Waterbabies" which sounds very similar to what you've described - live action, then animation when the kid goes into the water, then back to live action for the end. I found it recently on DVD and watched it. It frightened me as a kid, and it's still a bit weird, even today. That might just be me though

This doesn't help, but the movie you've described sounds much like a version I remember from when I was a kid. While the live action only sounds slightly familiar, this version did not look like the stills I've seen online of the 1979 version. The animation was much cleaner and more realistic if I remember correctly. *shrugs* Though I could be way off.

No it definitely wasnt Water Babies...i have seen that and remember it well...i love that one too! I just wish i could figure out which one this was...its very frustrating...and we watched it every year in primary school really for our 'movie' days...oh well i guess im going to have to give up, though i am looking forward to the new one!
shareThe only movie I have seen with this idea was 'The Phantom Tollbooth' with Butch Patrick, a kid who turns into a cartoon once he enters the tollbooth and enters a strange land. Nothing to do with Narnia, but it was pretty good.

I know which version you are talking about - I too, have been looking for it. My sister and I used to watch it all the time. The animation was a lot more realistic. I especially remember Aslan's death scene. He walks down the hillside and the flowers pop up. They were all different colors, not just the daisies like in the 1979 version. Also, when either all the kids or just Edmund are in the witch's castle, they pass Tumnus as a stone statue and he cries. His stone self looked more realistic then the 1979. I just finished watching the 1979 version and I was so disappointed that it wasn't THE one. You are not imagining things - I remember it too!

Well i remember one scene in the cartoon version of this where they are in a little snow cave and they are hiding away and they start eating sandwiches, lay out a blanket and what not. It's a vague memory. Would be interesting to see what version this is!

I realize this is 8 years later, but I'm wondering if you might not be thinking about the 1978 version of Lord of the Rings? It starts out as live action in the introduction, and then goes into cartoon. Some of the battle scenes switch back to live action again.
