Does anyone know who wrote the book this movie is made from?

I read the book as a teen, and the movie followed the book fairly well, so I was wondering if anyone knew who the author was.

I still have my copy. The cover blurb says, "The terrifying new novel by John Coyne. Based on a story by Jimmy Sangster."

It was an original screenplay. The book was a novelization of the movie. John Coyne was the novelist. He wrote several original horror novels in the eighties, but "The Legacy" was a commission. Many a novelist wrote novelizations in the seventies and eighties. It was a good way to pay the bills.

But the commercials say that it is based on the best selling book!

Beats me. That's what I found on Wikipedia and Goodreads. Perhaps the book was released a few months before the movie. so that claim was truthful as it was?
