Way too overrated! (spoilers within)

Is it only me who says that this movie is a cra*p??
The story is so poor... I mean, somebody killing grandsons (!) to have a revenge for her grandmother's death?? It's so unreal! Who believes it?
But apart from the story, the movie is really slow-paced, very boring.

I disagree with everything you say. This is a real interesting and original story, excellently done. "Who believes it?" -With your overcritical attitude, you're gonna have major problems with just about every movie ever made. This movie is an underrated gem.

definetely under-rated, maybe not the # 1 movie of the 70's but still better than a lot of films ever made ! not just of the 70's !!!

The Hannan character's wife is shot dead and he is institutionalized for a while. Yet every scene, Hannan never has a hair out of place, is clean shaved and wears pressed suits and shirts. I would expect this guy to be a physical wreck. This hurts the credibility of the film in my opinion.

Where is rated very highly? Most people remember it (if they remember it at all) as a decent, fairly stylish thriller in the vein of Hitchcock. That seems accurate to me.

It was terrible...

It was pretty awful. The trick is finding out who wants to kill Hannan and it unfolds like a thousand other mysteries, clue by clue, but the motive is absurd and then there are the plot holes you can drive a truck through as how she knew how to move into his apartment and why he never checked who actually let the place to her and how come a third generation would yield only five guys from five guys, and why was she such a successful murderer in the first place, and so on. The parallels to Hitchcock are so superficial, not in the least that there is always a Jesuit sub-text to his films, and even though DiPalma's pictures lack any sort of intellectual rigor they are better copies than this. There is nothing Hitchcockian about this picture except maybe an excellent Rosza score.

Hopefully. Anyways... overrated? Are you kidding me? Not much of anyone´s even heard of the bloody movie which is a shame because it´s one of the most imaginative, genuinely suspenseful and superbly shot Hitchcock "homages", or whatever you call them, out there. Seriously rivaling DePalma´s best similar works like Sisters, Dressed To Kill or Body Double. Colorful and really entertaining stuff with interesting enough characters and decent enough acting. As for "who believes it?"... well, anyone able to suspend disbelief for 97 minutes, I´d think. And Demme really was at his best before he landed squarely in the middle of the mainstream in the 1990´s. This one´s a 8/10.

if anything this film is underrated..... do people really even talk about this film? it's quite a lot of fun.... and there are some really great shots sprinkled throughout.

obviously not Demme's best
but an incredibly enjoyable film from the 70's.

I was trying my hardest to make a Jacques Tati movie.
