Makes me laugh.........

No, the film doesn't make me laugh, the amount of abuse it gets does! Remaking Hitchcock films is always dangerous as many people will hate the remakes because they are remakes of 'classics'. I must say that the Hitchcock version of this story is actually one of my least favourite of his films. It just wasn't directed as well as most of his films and the characters were not as interesting as, say, Brendan and his 'friends' from 'Rope' (one of Hitchcock's masterpieces and one of my favourite films.

The remake, I think was a lot better and more fun. The two old characters here are likable whereas in the original they were just annoying.

I am not attacking the Big H and I still liked the original (which I own a copy of) but I just prefered the remake and hate the way it is attacked mainly because it is a remake of a Hitchcock film.

Regards,
The Count

i agree with "The Count" - i saw it today and although i knew from the title that it was a remake of a hitchcock i hadnt seen the orginal and i thought this was fun, the leads had good chemistry and it has a nice feel to it as well as being filmed well - its referred to as a disastorous flop on the cybill shepherd board which i think is v unfair

I respectfully have to do a 180 here. Absolutely love the original, even if it is a bit dated. This version is okay and Cybill is VERY nice to look at but she seems to be hollering at everyone to make her point and Gould is just plain goofy. The one standout performance, IMHO, is by Herbert Lom.

Cybill was acting her little heart out. Which might be OK, if you didn't SEE it on her face every time she tried to perform her craft. I usually like Cybill, but she was totally not up to the challenge in this case. The scenes where she was trying to convince everyone that her "friend" was missing just went on and on and on. With Cybill being manic in a totally inappropriate way. And THEN they got to the scenes where Cybill engaged in "amusing banter" with Gould over the missing friend. Again, interminable, painfully unfunny scenes.

Poor Angel Lansbury looked thoroughly ashamed to be trapped in this horrible movie. Lord love her, she did her best to breathe some life into the thing, but it was just dead on arrival.

What a horrible movie.

LOL! I'm not sure it was a horrible movie but very close. And clay-brown you are right, poor Angel Lansbury was probably thinking WTF did I sign to do this movie. Maybe she lost a bet:)

a very entertaining film. comparing it to the original is as pointless as some have suggested it was to remake the original. you've got two major 70s stars in the lead roles (gould and shepherd); and lansbury and lom lead a pitch perfect supporting cast. if lowe and carmichael don't crack you up, (with upper-crust brit accent) "well, i just don't know..." :-)
however if, after watching this film, you believe any of it, i've got a piece of beachfront property on three mile island to sell you. :-P

Make your mind up.

In another thread you say "I liked it, but the original is better (as it was the original!)."

You can't have it both ways.

Really? Wow. I am not sure why I did as I most definitely prefer this version; I guess I was meant to give credit to the original script...

I agree completely with the opening poster. The original is only rated highly because its Hitch. This remake is far more enjoyable and stands up to repeat viewing better in my view....and I'm a big fan of many of Hitch's films.

The HC one will be (is) better remembered and for good reason, though it did have a few flaws. This is charming though.

I just watched both versions (apparently there's a 2013 TV version too) and found this remake to be a charming romp, fun and scenic and fairly true to the original. Was it just fate or what that they cast Angela Lansbury as an English nanny? She's perfect. I think the original had better wacky banter between the two leads, but this is not a shabby effort at all.

Now finish up them taters! I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.
