Old employer should have given him a lower-level job

Firing the poor guy, when they knew he was fighting for his son, was low. They should’ve just reduced his job duties, eliminating the need for him to explain a firing in court.

He would be working for the job and money, as opposed to collecting unemployment for being fired, which the company would need to pay half.

The client had probably demanded it and they probably wanted to demonstrate to the client that they were willing to do anything to please them.

Or at least wait until January when it would be easier to find a new job.
