I guess they fell victim to some combination of (i) general stinginess and (ii) consideration of sexual harassment/dramshop/etc. liability.
Companies became liable for their drunken employees trying to make it home behind the wheel of their cars so most of them put the kibosh on parties with alcohol being served...

Ever since the financial collapse of a few years ago, companies have tightened their belt... Expense accounts are gone, parties are gone, business lunches are gone...

Depending on the employers, some companies give the option of letting their employees leave early (especially ones who have kids). At least they used to.

shareSome companies do. My last company threw a fairly big bash at a hotel every year. If you drank at the party, you had to stay overnight at the hotel. The company even footed the hotel bill. Heck, the president of the company flew in for our site's party and got totally sloshed drinking appletinis.
