I'm a middle-aged woman and have no idea how to make french toast. Well, I do, now, since watching this movie, but will soon forget. :)
shareI never got the impression that Ted was incapable of making French Toast. I got the impression that everything was just hitting too hard too fast. He was on overload. Everyone who feels overwhelmed can get stupid about the stupidest things... like cooking French Toast. He was basically in shock. Luckily, Billy was more resilient.

I found the French Toast scene a bit phony, but it kinda worked in the context of the film, by adding a bit of humor to a serious situation. He was making an effort with Billy, but he was also understandably distracted in his mind, but he was still being dopey. All he had to do, was pour the beaten egg that was in the cup, into a bowl. Even Billy would have seen his mother do this and could have commented.
Don't eat the whole ones! Those are for the guests. 🍪
