Wow, I love this movie.

While the opener, My generation, gets attention because of the explosion that nearly killed half of Hollywood at the end, it's the next song, I Can't Explain, that gets us going. My Generation is lip synch, but I Can't Explain, from a different show, is apparently live. And it rocks. Moon was incredible.

Having seen the movie in the theaters as a student, I bought the vhs tape about ten years ago. It sounded awful - like an old cassette tape that had been left in the sun. I thought it was defective. Turns out it was the master they were creating the tapes from.

When the restoration project was initiated, the bad tape was discovered and they went further into the archives for the source tapes. Thank god. This movie really sounds great. And a bonus track of Entwhistle's isolated bass on one or two live tracks is really entertaining.

Pointing out the obvious: If you are a Who fan and haven't seen this, you really should. It's one of the finest rock movies ever made and a fitting tribute to a great band.

Wow, thanks for the tip on the new movie - I knew nothing about, even though I visit Townshend's website often.

Hi

Some of the early footage is from the very popular UK TV show "Ready Steady Go !!" which aired from late '63 to late '66. It started off as a pop tv prog where audiences of young people would get to see pop-stars perform lip-synch to their latest hits. So people like the Beatles and Helen Shapiro and various doo-wop types were on it. But as the UK R&B sound took root, the show began to take a direction. They began to showcase American R&B artists, as well as UK R&B groups and began to attract sharper audiences. In particular, the show became popular with the growing Mod scene. Tickets for the shows would be handed out to the best dancers and sharpest dressed guys in the nightclubs regularly poplular with Mods, so they would make up the RSG audience. If you look at editions of RSG ! on DVD, you can easily see the faces and the numbers. RSG also used to have fashion items and taught the new dances, such as the block and the hitch-hiker. Also Patrick and his wife used to teach the dancing.

The Who started to appear on RSG ! in 1965 - with "I Can't Explain" (seen in the Kids film) and also "Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere" (seen in the KIds too) plus "Shout and Shimmy" and various other song appearances till RSG! ended. RSG also showcased the Tamla touring show in 1965 and an Otis Redding Special in 1966. The Beatles were regulars (though Mods dodn't rate them) and the Stones too.

RSG helped bring the Mod scene out of London and into the UK. My brother was an Edinburgh Mod and had sharp suits and shirts and a Lambretta Li series 2

And in appreciation of the boost Ready Steady Go! gave its budding career, the Who titled an early EP Ready Steady Who.
