the blood on pete's hand

During the Spark's sequence at Woodstock, why is Pete's hand bleeding?

reply

If you thrash the guitar strings with as much force as Pete did, you are in great danger of taking a chunk of your finger or thumbnail off, and this will bleed like crazy. I know - it's happened to me!

Other men sail through life, but I've struck a reef.

Apparently he even completely impaled his hand on the tremolo bar once from wind milling his arm so wildly.

Have you ever tried to windmill on a guitar, my hand has bleed before

reply

It's a bit like a cheese-slicer !

Townshend has mentioned in interviews how he has injured himself - slicing his fingers with the strings. During the clip mentioned by the OP, you can also see flecks of bllod on his face!

Wow, talk about 'suffering for your art!' That being said Pete was/is one of the greatest guitarists who ever lived!

Dont ever try it while drunk! I was stuffing around on my SG last week (The WHo had just played in my city and were sensational!) and thought i'd give it another go (hadnt tried it in ages) and did 1 perfect windmill - then popped the top 2 strings with my thumb and cut the hell out of it.

reply

Yeah, it's just a risk guitar players put up with when they really go at it. I heard the Rolling Stones album "Let it Bleed" got its name from Keith Richards bloodying his fingers up in the studio.

reply

Pete is an aggressive guitar player, it happens. I play acoustic guitar and I've cut myself while strumming intensely with my index finger or even a pick at times.

Ever try to play pinball wizard? There's some real opportunity for injury there, haha.

Don't know about that, but if true, it shows that the Stones rocked harder than the Beatles--in "Helter Skelter," Ringo complains about blisters on his fingers. Wimp.

Doesn't watching that performance make it clear? Those windmill strums are no joke.
