this is the most watched movie of all time

I never even heard of this movie until last night but there was a programme about religous films on channel 4 in the uk and they said this is the most watched movie around the world of all time even more so than titanic and other huge blockbusters. It is hard to believe but it is true

More than any of Star Wars? Wow.

But then I forget, not everyone's a geek like me... ;)

Not only has this film been in the theatres (in 1979), but it's also been shown on TV, is on video and (probably) DVD and can be viewed online as well as a streaming video. It really isn't that hard to believe that so many people have seen it considering it is extremely accessible.

reply

Actually most movies have been in theatres, are available on video and DVD and can be gotten on-line.

If it really is the most viewed movie ever it deserves to be. Not because it's the best Jesus move made but because of it's message.

reply

I believe this. I remember this film from my childhood. As I recall, every Easter it was aired on tv in my country back then. It really stucked on my mind.

reply

It's also the most translated movie of all time. Mostly due to missionaries.

Look at us. Look at what they make you give.

I used to work with the director of this movie (one of them) and believe me, it ain't been seen by that many people.
I certainly haven't seen it, though I have enjoyed some of Peter's other work, especially "To The Devil a Daughter"

I've worked for The JESUS Film Project for 18 years now and have had some part in the production or distribution of nearly 900 different language versions of the 1,055 languages "JESUS" is available in. We have collected actual statistics and estimates based on expected viewership per media piece, per broadcast & per showing (16mm film, 35mm film, video)for 30 years now. Our best estimates are over 6 billion viewings (many of course are repeat viewings), resulting in over 220 million decisions worldwide to follow Christ as Lord. Other organizations have estimated over 750,000 churches have been started worldwide as a result of or including use of the film "JESUS". The stories of lives changed for the better, healings at showings, and reconciliation among tribes or people taking place after viewing the film are many. Stories & more info can be found at www.jesusfilm.org. You can stream the movie in many languages at that site. In the last 4 days we've had people from 122 countries streaming.

most watched movie of all time?

then how come it only has 800+ votes on IMDB?

Dead right. Even assuming that a large part of its audience doesn't have easy access to the internet, any film with billions (!) of viewings is bound to leave a larger footprint on IMDB.

reply

Missionaries have translated/spread this movie to a great number of countries where people don't have internet access. The majority of the people in the world don't live in Europe or North America (where imdb is most used), but in Africa, Asia and South America, and I'm sure many people don't have a "let's vote this movie on imdb" culture.

reply

This stat is baloney, movies like 'The Wizard of Oz', 'Casablanca', 'Gone with the Wind' have been watched more than 'Jesus'. In fact no one that I know (I go to a Christian school) has ever heard of this movie.

reply

I certainly doubt that claim no matter how many languages it has been translated to. I would guess that "Life of Brian" which was also released in 1979 has been seen by a lot more people than this movie. As someone else pointed out, the stats on IMDB tells a different story. "Life of Brian" is still a popular movie in the mainstream, "Jesus" is not.

reply

It's true because of the Jesus Film project where a group uses the film to evangelize. It's translated into many different languages and has been used in this capacity for 35 years now.
