What's this about Keitel being overdubbed?

I have an original of "Saturn 3" on VHS, and Harvey Keitel's own voice is used in the film. However, I keep reading about cuts of this movie that have overdubbed his voice with someone else. Odd.

Anyone know any details on this?

Maybe there's a different version or something. I know he was a lot younger in this movie, but higher pitched "geeky" like voice in the movie sounded nothing like his deeper New Yorkish voice. Again it's an old movie and he was much younger back then, but it sounded nothing like him, least the version I saw

I just watched this and I thought it sounded nothing like Keitel's voice. In a few places it could have been his, but mostly I thought the same thing - dubbed?!

reply

My guess is you only *think* it's Keitel's voice on your VHS copy. But it's actually the same dubbed version as ever.

He was dubbed on all versions

Was pretty pissed off about it from what I read.

The odd wussy-sounding voice on the one I just watched is not Harvey's voice at all...which is very odd! As someone else posted, he had a right to be pissed, I mean what's wrong with his own voice??

well if we cant tell, its a damn good job.

but i didnt even recognise the face. seems obvious now

Itá all here..... Check this astonishing link http://saturn3makingof.com/
Absolutely amazing!
HUGE RESPECT TO GREGORY MOSS. I think this answers and explains thoroughly just about everything. With unseen filmed production shots and external links. BTW the full 103 minute version can be found and downloaded from amule, however it is in German. Still worth it. Enjoy. Click on this link.

Thanks for posting the link to that website, it was very informative.

I remember reading an article years back that stated Roy Dotrice dubbed Keitel's voice. I can't remember the reason for this.

You can't palm off a second-rater on me. You gotta remember I was in the pink!

I have been reading some of the sites about Saturn 3. The reason given for the overdub on those sites is that Keitel got disgruntled and refused to do looping. The reasons for the falling out aren't exactly clear, but might have to do with that the director wanted him to cut back on the New York accent.

It IS Roy Dotrice. I knew that voice sounded familiar. Good call.

I hate that stuff...

remember when the only copy of MAD MAX you could find (in the US) was dubbed into 'American'? So Max sounded like a Chinese kung fu villain?

Luckily that's been resolved thanks to the MGM dvd...

BUT NO ONE HAS EVER RESOLVED THE WORST OF THEM -- Timothy Carey's dubbed voice in EAST OF EDEN.

My guess is the same reason he was dubbed there is why Harvey's dubbed here - worried execs found him incoherent - no Brooklyn accents in space (or California)

Remember Harvey in Last Temptation of Christ - "Heyyy Jesus. Whatcha doin' over deah?"

reply

For the record, it was George Miller himself who insisted on the dubbing of Mad Max. He didn't think Americans would be able to stand all of the Australian accents. Not saying that means it was a good call, but I'd bet dollars to donuts you assumed it was a case of an American distributor ruining someone else's movie.
