Anyone have any ideas about what the hell that vent at the beginning of the film is really there for??? I mean the one the bloke gets sucked through the grating and chewed up?? This may be a silly question...I know that but...how many others have thought what the f£$% is the point of it?? Other than for the sake of making the original pilot disappear???

It's an airlock for "emergency evacuation", why they would put it in a locker room is up for debate - but mainly, it's a plot device :). The wires across the airlock were put up there by the murderer ( Captain Benson ) who pulled the door mechanism in order to murder Captain James. The novel explains it better than the film does and isn't a bad read actually, it manages to answer a lot of questions this film brings up including why non of Adam's guts are in the explosion at the end. It also gives us a look at what happens after Alex returns to Earth. I found my copy on Ebay actually.
