It was missed in the "Quotes" section of IMDB but should have been included IMVHO.

At the very beginning of the movie when Claud's father is escorting him to the bus his father says something to the effect: "Take care of yourself. The smart people need to worry. GOD takes care of the ignorant ones."

That turns out to be very telling in the movie. Berger outsmarts himself to his own peril. The old man's Midwestern knowledge turns out to be right.

Claude just got caught up in the moment and pulled along for the ride.
