Title change

Was anyone else annoyed by the fact that IMDB had been listing this as The Ace? They finally changed it back, thank you.
Robert Duvall and Michael O'Keefe were nominated for Oscars for their performancesw in The Great Santini, NOT The Ace. It was adapted from an amazing book titled The Great Santini, NOT The Ace.

I recall when this came out on HBO (many, many years ago) it had two different titles. I know The Great Santini was one of them but I couldn't remember the other. I think you are right, this film was also released with the title "The Ace". Many movies do that, even if they were based on a book. Look at "Baa Baa Black Sheep". When the show went into syndication it was re-titled "Black Sheep Squadron", despite the fact that the show's original title is the same as the title of the book it was based on.

I don't have an opinion. The word "opinion" implies the possibility I'm wrong.

THE FILM was made as an independant. It was picked up by Orion Pictures for theatrical release under the title "The Great Santini". However as great as the filmwas it failed at the box office! It was not a hit. It was also released under the title "The Ace" to see if they could turn the film into a hit. That plan did not work.

HBO then picked up the pay tv rights. The producers sold HBO The film under the name "The Ace".

At the end of the year the film found itself on lots of film critics "TEN BEST LIST". So it was given another theatrical release under "The Great Santini".
however it had already been airing on HBO as "The Ace". However durring the last theatrical release HBO agreed not to show the fim again until after award season. When HBO started airing the film again it was shown as "The Great Santini".

When the film was shown as "The Ace" on HBO before one credit there was a disclaimer that said "Originaly shown as The Great Santini in theatres".

It should be known that it was filmed under the title " The Great Santini".
