Would $10,000 dollars last in NYC in 1979 especially with the wonderful inflation rate at the time?? I don't know why they were giving $25K away after the first guy died.

The equivalent in today's dollars would be about $35,000. That wouldn't last two guys very long.

I think they lived very modestly and didn't expect to live too much longer anyway. That's why they did it - to go out in style.

That money was in addition to what the got from Social Security. As long as they didn't blow it all they could live very comfortably on it.
