When Wilder tells Ford he is from Poland, Ford asks "is that near Pittsburgh"? Wilder answers, "No, it's near Czechoslavakia". Czechoslavakia was created after World War I. It did not exist in 1850.

Most of what you see in this film didn't exist in 1850. The date seems to have been chosen because of the Gold Rush.

I don't think that was a goof. I think it was an intentional joke. I could be wrong, but that's how I took it.
