I agree -- she was a lovely young actress, and played the part here with just the right combination of emotions -- her initial irritation at Joel slowly gives way to an attraction (especially in reaction to her boorish escort at the nightclub, when he treats Joel abominably). Especially satisfying is the lovely line she gives Joel when he accidentally walks into her bedroom and says, "Oops -- wrong door," to which she replies, "No -- *right* door." It's a sweet scene, and the way that Joel's and Toni's relationship develops thereafter is one of the most satisfying subplots of the movie; the subsequent growth that Joel's character exhibits couldn't have happened without her, and Valerie Quennessen was just about the perfect actress for the part . . . gentle but with hints of an underlying toughness. I, too, was saddened when I learned of her pointless death at 31 in a road accident (almost the same age as American actor Brandon De Wilde, who likewise died in an accident at 30). Even though some accounts indicate that she had decided to give up acting to devote time to her family, it was a sad, premature end to her life, and the tragic loss of her promising (and still potential) career. Many of us who love this movie will always cherish Toni as she was so endearing played by Ms. Quennessen.
AMEN!!!! WE lost a lot when she passed away, yet another shining star that had brightned our nights. Luckily I bought the DVD of this (which recently was released), and can see her as Toni again and again. She was also so gorgeous and charming in Summer Lovers. That movie was ok, but she was STUNNING in it!
Valerie, was really beautifull actress. In the film "Conan the Barbarian" she was'nt seen on screen that much but in "Summer Lover" she was really freaking hot!!.It's to bad she'd died so young at the age 31 that's so sad.
I'll get "Summer Lovers" on dvd because I want to see the whole film;there's some of the film on YouTube, but not the entire film though just scences.
And Valerie looks so good in this film too;the film itself looks good on the greek island too.
