I don't know why there isn't a USA DVD, because I don't understand the rules of who owns what in terms of copyright. I'm a Brit living in the USA, so I ordered the region 2 PAL version to play on my multi-standard set-up. I have read many negative reports on this movie, but I remain firmly in favor. In my humble opinion, this movie is a masterpiece of cinematic history and it is what it is. Escape to Athena provides terrific entertaiment, not least because it shows off the beauty of the Greek island of Rhodes. The mixture of humor and drama are just about right, however the TV versions may lose some of the comedial impact. For example, the scene at the beginning where Sergeant Mann (Michael Sheard) approaches David Niven with his gun drawn and incorrectly estimates the age of a historical artifact. Mr. Niven's character calls Sergeant Mann an 'ignorant bastard', but those words are diluted somewhat for the UK TV version. I found the stronger language version funnier. For those who wanted something different or something better, I don't know what to suggest. The R2 DVD has no extras and the technical quality is poor, with severe motion judder when the camera pans from left to right or vice versa. This is possibly because European PAL DVDs are authored at 25 frames per second, whereas all movies are originally shot at 24 frames per second. In addition to that, I found the actual picture quality of the DVD rather grubby. The movie was shot in Panavision, which is a high quality 35 mm anamorphic format. In this modern day (just 28 years later), I would have thought the motion picture industry could have dug up a cleaner print from which to produce a DVD. I understand it is also possible to digitally clean up scratches and other blemishes, before submitting the movie for DVD authoring. The PAL format has the potential to offer superb DVD picture quality, but that has not happened in this case.

Hi, thanks for teh info;
I'm also a Brit living in the US;
I have a multi system set up and have many R2 DVD's but would prefer a R1 version simply because I only have 1 room where I have an R2 set up;
I'm dissapointed to hear the quality of the R2 DVD is a little sub par;
I was just about to order it from HMV.
The rights on all those ITC (Lew Grades old company) have been in limbo for some time over here, so I'm not sure it'll ever come out in the US...

Hi J - Perhaps I was being a little unfair, criticizing the picture quality like that. At home, we have 3 DVD players that are PAL capable. Two of these are $30 budget models and they are connected to TVs that cannot play PAL. Therefore the players are converting from PAL to NTSC to suit the TV and the picture quality is far from ideal. The third PAL-capable player is a UK multi-region Sony model, which outputs true PAL or true NTSC, depending on which disc it plays. That player is connected to a much larger TV display, which is also capable of true PAL. Perhaps the large display reveals too much detail and it is likely that most viewers would be pleased with the image quality on a regular sized TV. My Escape to Athena disc came from play.com for 10 quid including shipping to a UK address. That supplier will not ship to the USA, so my brother in Scotland ordered it and sent it over here for a grand total of 14 quid. It took them about ten years to release Escape to Athena on standard PAL DVD, so there is no way we're going to see a Blu-ray version any time soon. Athena is a feel-good movie and the Greek landscape looks gorgeous. I recommend you buy it.

I`m just a little curious as to which UK r2 disc you`ve got as the special edition has some interviews with the director and a number of the stars including Moore,Savalas,Valentine.There`s also a quite entertaining segment where the actors are being interviewed by their children!I thought the picture was fine and certainly nice to have it in the correct aspect ratio.Certainly didn`t think it was a poor dvd-I`m no expert but perhaps the Pal-Ntsc conversion denigrates the picture in some way.Having said that I`ve got many U.S. r1 dvd`s which I watch in the U.K. and the picture is fine without any motion-judder.Agreed it`s a film to enjoy for the comedy aspect and the lovely scenery-definitely not one to approach if you`re expecting a tough & gritty war epic!

Which version do you own?
which company released it? date of release etc?

Escape to Athena has been released on Blu-ray in the UK and I have placed my order. According to blu-ray.com, it is region free, so I should be able to play it on my USA model PS3. After I've checked out the quality, I will further post here.
