Question re: Relationship w/ Brother-in-Law Willi

Does this wonderful film imply that Maria had a sexual relationship w/ her brother-in-law Willi? Kindly tell me what you think and why. Thanks!

I don't think so.

Wenever there's a sexual relationship in this film, it's proclaimed explicitly (sometimes rather subtly yes, but still explicitly). It might be as unsubtle as a character taking off all their clothes, or a character appearing in a doorway in their underwear, or as subtle as the character saying "nobody's home". But there's always something - nothing's just 'implied' in this movie. Things that might very well be implications in other movies aren't in this one.

Characters straight-out say "I want to sleep with you", or drop an F-bomb, or take off all their clothes (not too many other examples of that in 1979). Fassbinder in general, and this movie in particular, are more "in your face" than "sly".

So it seems to me that if we don't actually see it, it didn't happen.

I appreciate your opinion and reasoning. I agree that Fassbinder tends to be 'in your face' about many things. Certainly he continues to be influential.

Great post, chuck. I think you're absolutely right.
