How does Bill die?

Bill is Maria's American soldier boyfriend, and after Maria's husband returns, Bill restrains her husband when he gets a little violent. Maria take a bottle and breaks it on Bill's head, knocking him out. OK, I get all that. But when did he get killed? I don't think breaking a bottle on someone's head would kill him, even in the movies. Did Maria's husband kill him or not (as he claims)? In any case, Maria doesn't seem very upset by his death (or her child by him, for that matter), even though she claims to like him.
