This film is so underrated

This movie epitomizes what you can do with imagination, guts and a little bit of someone elses cash! It's definitely one of my favorite films and totally captures the spirit of its time and place.

My guess is that people who criticize this film for its low production values and shoddy acting are slightly missing the point -> those things are completely irrelevant here. These pictures are real goddammit! The movie is bursting with life and is shouting this is what you can do if you steal a film camera and have the guts to use it!

I echo your sentiments my friend. A lot of misguided dislike around for this flick.
I probably watch this once a year.

I love the movie, but I think it requires intelligence and a deep adoration of unconventional low budget filmmaking to fully appreciate it. Sadly, both attributes are becoming increasingly rare among filmgoers.

What sets The Driller Killer apart from all the other hum-drum slashers out there is that it had more thought put into it (it's not just mindless violence for the sake of violence). Reno's character is really fascinating. Right at the start, we are introduced (in a rather confusing sequence) to his father, who happens to be homeless. This basically sets the course for the rest of the film and explains why Reno begins to lash out against the derelicts. With all of his current money struggles, his fears of turning into his dad push him over the edge, and he also slowly loses his grip with reality.

I originally wondered why he never tried killing the punk band. But when you realize that his violent tendencies stem from issues with his dad, it then makes sense that he didn't bother with the band.

Speaking of the band, the constant scenes with them kind of annoyed me at first, but now I find them to be humorous. But I wonder if Abel intentionally made the punk band annoying within the film so that we could sympathize with Reno's frustration.

Welcome to Fright Night....for real. 
