One of the WORST Movies I Have EVER Seen!

So, after watching the Cinema Snob's review of it for Public Domain Month back in 2011, I decided to finally sit down and watch this "gem" for myself. Good lord, Driller Killer is... well, I'd call it "crap", but that would be complimenting it.

Yes, I realize it's a low-budget Z-grade movie about a psycho who murders people with a power drill. Simple concept, but executed POORLY. Just because a film is low-budget doesn't mean it has to be bad. Several of Peter Jackson's early films were very low budget, and they were pretty good, so what is Abel Ferrara's excuse?
If they had put a little effort into it, properly develop its story and characters, maybe it would've been decent. But no, every character in this movie is a scumbag who you don't care about at all, and feel all the more disappointed that THEY aren't the ones who die. The ONLY character I found likeable was the art critic, as the man who played him seemed to be the only performer who was actually TRYING. Nobody else looked like they gave a crap, especially Abel Ferrara. He may be an acclaimed director, but he's a terrible actor. For the life of me I can't understand why he insisted on starring in this movie... though, I also can't understand why he agreed to direct it in the first place. Maybe life was imitating art (pun intended)? He was a struggling artist in the big city who needed money? Okay, but he could've at least put some effort into it!

So, Abel's acting is so wooden you can see the knotholes (mainly in his head), his character is flat, uninteresting, immoral, and just a big jerk-off. He lives with two sluts who contribute very little to the story. They were just put in there as whacking material for the men in the audience. Make them have a lesbian relationship, that'll turn the guys' heads.
What's the plot? A starving artist in New York City is trying to make ends meet while fulfilling his dream of being an artist, while having to deal with an annoying rock band upstairs, a lackadasical landlord, slutty roommates and debt. Okay... that's a believable scenario. But then it all of a sudden drives him crazy so he runs out into the night to murder homeless people with a power drill? What's the connection? Why doesn't he attack the people who annoy him? It was never stated that he had a problem with the homeless.

The acting was horrible, the script is almost non-existent, the cinematography is good in SOME areas but clumsy in others, the sound quality is garbage, and the editing was ATROCIOUS.
No wonder Ferrara disowned this movie and let the copyright lapse so it could fall into Public Domain. I wouldn't want to admit I worked on this movie either. Maybe that's why he called himself Jimmy Laine in his acting and editing credits... though why not in directing too?

Again, this movie is TERRIBLE in EVERY respect.

It's one of the best horror films of the '70s. Remarkable on all fronts.

I agree with you on absolutely disagreeing with the Op and the age old "worst movie I ever saw " thread title only exposes one's lack of exploration into and experience inside the world of film.

This film VERY underrated and truly a classic.

It has a good deal of substance for those who are smart enough to recognize it. I realize it's not for everyone, but people should be more careful about what they deem "the worst"; in some cases, like this one, it makes them look pretty vacant, unobservant and generally dim.

Reminds me of Bashki's Heavy Traffic.
