I never understoodd why this movie got an 'R' rating

I haven't seen this movie in years. Probably the last time I saw it was late night on HBO back in the early 80s. I think there was some bad language but the violence was tame even by TV movie standards. Seriously lasers coming out of an aliens eyes, hitting the victim, and then some canned explosion with no blood? It's alive and Jaws was more violent than this cheesy flick and they got a PG rating. What Gives?

I was surprised at the rating also. No f-bombs, no boobies (other than the cops), and just a touch of cartoon violence. This movie would appeal to the 15-year-old in all of us, and we shouldn't have to drag our parent or guardian along.

Sorry for late response. I just watched it last night. On The Commentary someone mentioned the same thing about the rating. There best guess was that dude that gets attacked outside the bar. His head gets ripped off. But other than that not much R rated stuff.
