Maybe the alien looks like a retarded giant because its true form would draw too much attention to itself? Or maybe the alien looks like a retarded giant because that was what he was originally meant to be?

It was the success of Alien that made the studio redefine the retarded giant as an alien - aliens where in, and retarded giants where out (in your face, Humongous!).

In any case, I love this fun scary flick.

I agree totally! It had its flaws - it was slow and much of the dialogue made no sense at all. The alien did look and act retarded. But the scenes in which the creature is on the hunt and the final confrontation against 50 or so cops were a blast! It had eerie mood builders like the whispering of the creature, the wind that accompanied his presence and the psychic link he had with that weirdo old lady. And I don't agree with most peoples assertion that the creature was freeze framed when the lasers were being shot. I've seen the movie many times and the beast and the background are moving many times when he is shooting lasers. Still with a nice big budget this could and would be a great film!

"The Dark" does deserve a remake. I don't say that lightly as I am disgusted with Hollywood's lack of imagination to come up with new source material. But this movie was pretty good, warts and all, and a remake with better make up and CGI effects could prove to be very entertaining.

They haven't remade it, but they have ripped it off in three films exclusively about the alien in question and two crossover films, what films am i talking about you ask? Why....Predator of course.
