Apparently, it was also quite an influential movie.

And it inspired and was referenced in many later works including spawning in the 90s the whole "violence in the media" movie category, which often involved works of Michael Haneke like "Benny's Video" (1992) and "Funny Games" (1997), Oliver Stone's "Natural Born Killers" (1994), the Belgian serial killer mockumentary thriller "Man Bites Dog" (1992), Peter Jackson's classic horror comedy "Braindead" (1992) (Dead Alive) and others, including certain found footage works like The Blair Witch Project (1999) etc etc etc.

There’s a scene in Platoon that Oliver Stone has admitted was inspired by Cannibal Holocaust

What scene in Platoon?

Where they shot the pigs and burned the village down (although in Platoon they didn't actually kill pigs).
