Gory, not scary

I finally watched this after years of being told that it's absolutely terrifying. I didn't get even a tingle of fear or anxiety the entire time... Granted, many scenes are certainly graphic, but did anyone else feel that this just wasn't a scary film?

I wouldn't say it's terrifying, more disturbing and voyeuristic. The controversy around this movie comes from the shocking content, not the frightening scenes, imo.

Would you say disturbing is not terrifying? Personally disturbing to me is the most terrifying emotion there is.

This film will stay with me till I die (unless I get a brain disease).

I get what you mean, I find disturbing movies the more effective ones. It's rare that a movie would terrify me anymore, to instill that fear in me. Disturbing movies don't necessarily instill fear in me, more dread and disgust.

Glad to hear you appreciate this beauty, its stayed with me for many years myself. Brilliant film making.

Honestly, I felt the same. I thought it was going to be really scary, but most of it was just hype. I guess people just use the word "terrifying" when they don't know how else to describe it. But I think people were just disturbed by the gore scenes, which were pretty unsettling, to be fair. I mean, sure, it would be terrifying if you imagine it actually happening to you. But the movie itself? Not really. Just gory.

I feel the same way about Salo. It's graphic, but not horrific to an extent (ex: With Salo, it's not scary visually--but psychologically it's horrific).

I see a lot of the "fear" in it being tied to the controversy with the animal deaths and speculation that they made a snuff film (since the actors had a contract to disappear for a year to add to the validity of the movie--which was ended quickly in court).

While I don't think it's scary, it doesn't change my feels for it (and I've made it clear before that I respect the movie).

Inasmuch as it basically created the "Found Footage" genre, it's admirable. And it took a lot of risks. My issue of contention wasn't with the film itself as much as the hype surrounding it.

The film has sensational hype around it, so I expected to see a hardcore gore film, but was surprised and impressed to find it was provocative and sobering. When I first saw it, the 'documentary' footage was convincing-looking enough to leave me feeling unnerved, but yeah it's the kind of film that makes you squirm in your seat rather than sit on the edge of it.

I didn't find it scary in the slightest. It was very graphic as you say, but not scary, not at all. I was laughing my ass off at the beginning when the natives are being shot at and the quite obvious staging. Not to mention there are no bullet holes in their bodies when they are shot, also the natives attacking people with those hatchets and quite obviously pulling punches when they attempt to strike a blow.

It also found it quite convenient during the second half of the film that the camera was always pointing the other way when something happens, like the spider on Faye and the snake in Felipe's boot, at least it gave the stage hand some time to get out of the frame.

Don't put the devil in the picture, cause' the religious groups won't wanna see it.
