Disappointment

I have never been the biggest D'Amato fan; many of his movies did nothing to impress me. After reading several posts about this movie (including several here), I was quite anxious to get my hands on it in hopes of viewing a great D'Amato film. Finding this flick was not hard, as there are quite a few specialty shops here that specialize in foreign and exploitation stuff. After watching it in its uncut form, I can honestly say that the word "disappointment" is a vast understatement. The so-called "shock" and "explicitness" was incredibly tame; topped off with a ho-hum plot and run-of-the-mill SFX. It's ironic too, because I am a big fan of Italian horror; I've seen virtually all there is from that country's most prolific directors: Fulci, Argento, Lenzi, Deodato, etc.

I've heard many proclaim that D'Amato is an acquired taste, and I may be partial to agree with that statement. In my eyes he isn't even close to being in the same league as the others I have mentioned above. About the only part of Beyond the Darkness that somewhat peaked my morbid fascination, was the enbalming scene; other than that, it was all downhill.

This film is essentially the nail in the coffin for me and D'Amato; it was a last chance effort for him to get in my good books, and it failed miserably. I was originally debating between this film and Jorg Buttgereit's "Nekromantik" (I've only ever seen the sequel) as to which would earn my money; I sincerely wish I could have reversed my decision now.

I actually owned the uncut version of "Erotic Nights of the Living Dead" a couple years ago; it was on sale at a specialty shop downtown. I actually had to force myself to watch it all the way through, as it bored the hell out of me! Definitely not what I was hoping for.

I haven't seen any of the "Emanuelle" films; I've read enough about them, and they seem to be basically sleazy exploitation flicks. I've been tempted to rent them, but due to my recent letdowns with D'Amato flicks, I'm kind of torn on my decision. Maybe as a last resort I'll pick one up.

So, let me get this straight? Everyone knows that D'Amato is a terrible hack, who pumped out interminable bore/gorefests, and you're disappointed when his films are unwatchable? Odd.

No I'm not. I have no problem watching "bad" films made simply to exploit one aspect or another, but when those movies get hyped up to signal the second coming or something, then that's different. As I expressed before, I am not a big D'Amato fan, but maybe I was expecting bigger and better things with this film due to all the ravings about it - particularly at this website. The comments were made by people who seemed to be on the same page as I when it came to films, so I bought into the "hype" and rented Buio Omega.

One thing I will say about this film, is that it is one of D'Amato's better films. Better in the sense that it's still trash compared to other Italian cinema of that time period, and that it's more of a standout when put next to other D'Amato films. D'Amato's fanbase for him and his movies sort of reminds me of the late Ed Wood - a bad director who made bad and atrocious films, yet remained a cult icon. Go figure.

D'Amato's 'Emanuelle' films are really good 70's grindhouse classics. Ultra stylish, well-edited and brilliantly scored erotica. The films he made with Laura Gemser as the world traveling photo journalist Emanuelle are his best stuff, IMO. D'Amato was better at sexual themed films than blood and gore horror. He stated in an interview that horror wasn't really his thing. He also made one of the most respected and classiest hardcore features, the impossible-to-find on dvd, 'Tarzan X,' which was actually shot on film, long after the other hardcore directors had turned to digital video. After watching this stuff you might be surprised that a guy responsible for so many ugly, nasty gore flicks, was also able to create images of intense beauty and artistry. I recommend you see more of this interesting director's work before you reach a final decision.

I have to agree with djbulmer7978 on this one. I had read how this was a great horror film, in comparison to the whole genre not just D'Amato's own works, and was disappointed after viewing it, if I had gone into it with my normal D'Amato expectations I'd have enjoyed it, but I expected more and it didn't deliver.

The movie was never really scary, it was eery or gross at times and laughable at most. When the hitchhhiker is having her fingernails pulled out I didn't find it at all disturbing, it was funny. It started off good when she saw Frank with his dead girlfriend, holding her eye in his hand, and she runs off, the garage door is locked (which I didn't understand later since the 'detective morgue guy' opened it easily the next morning) and so she ran back to attack him, that made no sense, anyway, he knocks her on the ground, sits on her and starts the torture, she was a rather big girl, and all she did was squirm and shriek, it'd have been more believable if she'd sat on top of him and ripped out his fingernails.

It got a bit better after that, hacking her apart, dissolving her, a great transition from the skull in the tub to the burial and then Iris' special dinner. Iris was the saving grace for this film, she was excellent, eery and cold, and her family was the scariest thing in the film, they should have extended that dinner scene somehow. The relationship between Iris and Frank was fascinating, the breast feeding scene, when she 'hand'led him, she brought the film alive.

Anyway, I guess Frank is some kind of ladies' man because he has no trouble not only getting women back to his house but getting them naked, in his bed or in his bathtub, there are some pretty easy-going women in his neck of the woods.

The scene with the jogger in the incinerator was good, I was kind of expecting it, but still was a good scene, mostly because of the look on Iris' face as she watches through the glass.

The ending was as disappointing as the rest of the film. I laughed when Iris pulled out Frank's eye, I mean he should have just moved, but instead he sat there and let her do it, though he was on top, I guess people in this movie like to make it easy for their attackers to remove body parts. The 'detective mortuary guy' shows up, I have no idea who this guy was or what his motive was, it would have been nice to know something about him, and watches the main character die.

Then, the big jump scene, which you could see coming a mile away if you've ever seen any horror movies, you know that if the movie goes a few minutes after the death of the 'bad guys' that there is going to be a jump scene, typically the bad guy coming back to life, but in this case you knew it would be the girl since that's who the guy was putting in the coffin... and she pops out of the coffin on queue, freeze frame, cheezy music, credits, hysterical laughter.

This one just didn't do it for me personally. Though I was highly impressed by the special effects, good for the time, even good for today. I'm not going to give up on D'Amato yet, I just won't expect as much in the future, and watch his stuff when I'm in the mood for a disgusting horror movie with lots of laughs.

remember, Iris pulled the girl out of the truck, she could have left the door unlocked for the mortuary guy to open

I agree that this movie kind of sucked. The only cool thing about it was Goblin's score, which in most cases was inappropriate for this movie.

This was my first D'Amato flick, and I definitely was bored as *beep* with the whole thing so I'm not going to bother with anything else.

D'Amato is not in the same league as some other Italian directors like M. Bava or D. Argento (at least his pre-90s work, when his movies started to decline).

He's not even a good director (he's terrible at setting up suspense, for example), but some people like his movies because they are usually absurd, over the top and very cheesy. (like Anthropophagus and Absurd)

He usually worked very low budget (sex)exploitation movies for hire. He's kinda like Italian version of Jesus Franco.

Well, I'm a horror nut and I thought Buio Omega was great! On the taboo subject of necrophilia I thought it was far more interesting than the overrated Nekromantik.
