My new favorite movie!

I just bought this DVD not too long ago and love it! If you are into the Italian horror genre, you have to get this one. The gore is plentiful and very realistic. There is some sex and nudity but not so much that it gets in the way of the story. The plot is not the best part but compared to other 70's Euro horror it's excellent!
If anyone else has seen it, I'd like to hear your thoughts!

Yeah it has some pretty nasty parts, my favorite is the embalming scene. When he puts in the eyeballs. All of the gore looks really real in this movie. Some of the best I've ever seen, can you think of a movie with better looking guts? I can't.
I don't think you got the ending, she doesn't come back to life, that's her sister dressed in her clothes. He switched them, why I'mnot sure, I guess it was just for the shock ending.
Does anyone know if there is a different version out on DVD in Italian?

reply

I guess he switched them because Elena was still 'fresh' and alive. He could have kept her at his house and pretend it was Anna.

BTW For me it was already clear he switched them (maybe that's my sick mind :-) ) before she was brought to the funeral house. I was thinking, she would get buried alive (not knowing that was the US title; i bought it as Beyond the darkness). Would have been a better ending IMHO. More creepy, like "Spoorloos" (and not the crappy remake "The Vanishing").

The "guts" you refer too are real - that's a real corpse Frank is working on.

I think the only reason Frank was driven to murder was because of Iris' influence, and the reactions of those around him to certain discoveries..(Which based upon the nature of the goings on,is totally acceptable)It looked as though he may not have murdered the hitchhiker if she had not attacked him...i mean he totally left her in the car by herself,And what about the girl he picked up at the Bar??What happened to her?And as for the jogger,Well her life might have been spared if she didn't turn her head to the right while she was on the Bed with Frank..He also vomits after the thought of the killings while Iris is stuffing her face with the slop...Obviously Frank was unable to cope with loss creating a mental fallacacy but i am positive his original intentions were not to murder,He always needed a trigger

Anyhow,just a thought.

I was beginning to think I was the only person on earth who would admit to liking this film...it's genuinely creepy and totally different to his other horror efforts which are much more chaotic and trashy.

Paul, as much as I tried to make sense out of this movie, the characters are totally shallow and what they do have no motivation but the director's will to shock the audience.

1- Frank comes back home after Anna's death, and he is quickly being "breast fed" by the maid! What is that all about?! 2- Waht about him leaving the hitchhiker asleep in the car while he's embalming Anna?! 3-Why in the heck does he torture the hitchhiker with the plyer before murdering her?!

It's all done for shocking purposes.

More senseless sequences: the undercover collector (it's not clear to me whereas he was a detective or not) which snicks into the basement and collects evidences in about 30 seconds. The girl Frank meets in the disco club who has no connection with the story, etc etc

It's hard to say but apart of the violence which is kinda graphic, "Buio Omega" ends up being a big disappointment. Terrible acting, annoying music (prog-rock doesn't get along well with horror), silly characters and a screenplay filled with anacronisms. It might work as a dark comedy for some people anyway...

The score for this was awesome. Prog-Rock is most def. in tune with Horror. Even John Carpenter's score for Halloween has a Prog-Rock feel to it.

Do The Mussolini! Headkick!

its a Goblin soundtrack, son

It reminded me of a pervy Falcon Crest - no idea why.

I preferred Emanuelle in America - I think Joe had more fun making that one.

reply

I wouldn't say the score for Halloween is Prog-Rock, since it's easy to play and VERY repetitious. But the Goblins quite possibly made the best score for an Italian Horror I've seen. Now that, I will agree that it sounds Prog-Rock.

Good post. This is what I was thinking finally after seeing it about 10 times. Frank seems to be a victim because he is rich, being the sole heir of his family's estate. Iris wants to become the lady of the manor, killing Anna with voodoo then helping to clean up Frank's murders and later blackmailing him into marrying her. The guy working at the funeral place is spending his own money to investigate Frank and I think he had it in mind to blackmail him when he busts in at the end. But since Frank died he gets the father's money off of the priest by making up the story about paying a large ransom to the "kidnappers". He says "It will be enough". Remember he threw the photograph out of the car window when he was leaving with the body cause it was useless since Frank was now dead.

You could tell it was Elena that was on the table because her eyes were closed whereas Anna's were always open. And I wonder what the Omega symbol on the station wagon meant/what the sign said in the back window. Notice that Frank's van and the station wagon have the same plate numbers, which was a goof.

Yes, Frank tears the hitchiker's fingernails out because she scratched him, bites the jogger because she bit his hand and stabs Iris cause she attacked him first with the knife.

This movie is in my eurohorror top ten and I need more D'amato dammit!
I only have Anthropophagus, Horrible and this.

I finally got the opportunity to see this last night and I LOVED IT!!! There are a few things that I cant get past. The cheesiness of the last second of the film, the dubbing (which I know cant be helped), and the disco chick's nasty boobies. LOL Other than that, I loved this film. The disemboweling scene had my eyes wide -- not with disgust, but with respect for them making it SO realistic. And how that girl NEVER moved at all every time the camera was on her is amazing (or was she a real corpse? Ive heard a few people ask that). This is one that I definitely want to own

Exterminate all rational thought. That is the conclusion I have come to

This is a great piece of Italian horror cinema. I first rented this on the Thriller Video label years ago (when I was probably too young to be watching this stuff) and really enjoyed it.

The Goblin score is definately one of the highlights. The light piano piecce, "Quiet Drops," is one of the bands finest compositions. (By the way, if anyone is interested, Morte Macabro did a CD with their version of this track and it's beautiful). There is something about this song that almost makes you feel Frank's pain.

Death Smiled at Murder is my favorite Joe D'Amato film but Buio Omega is right up there with it.
