the scariest part

I found the time when all the kids started to notice that the odd children in jackets are the brood creatures.
That bit freaks me out everytime.

I had to turn it off after that part.... that grunt that the child made... it sent shivers down my spine!!
That's what I get for watching it at 3 am!!!

I have always been haunted by the kids killing the teacher in the classroom w/ a mallet. Caught this flick at way too young an age. It gave me nightmares for months & it still gives me the creeps.

reply

Have to agree there..it's the glimpses that are scariest!
I wonder if you can still buy those 70s childrens matching coats and trousers? Put the film on at 3am and then bring out some random kids...

reply

hahaha that would scare me to death!

reply

I was quite skeptical at the beginning of the movie, it seemed like your typical cheesey 70's horror flick...but when Samantha Eggar took that baby out of that disgusting sack and began feeding on it....oh god, I tried to look away but I just couldn't. Great movie.

I don't think that Nola starts eating the baby itself. I think what she's doing is similar to what animals do - she's eating the birth sac, so that the baby can get out. That was certainly gross (my comment was, "Oh David - did we really need to see that?"), but the scariest shock for me came at the beginning when the first Brood child is on the staircase.

This movie started out very creepy, but by the end, it just seemed silly. Oliver Reed was very amusing (I love that little shrug he gives during his last dialogue with the father), but even he couldn't save the end of this one for me.

reply

That's right, mayumi. In a severely edited version released in Europe, it looked even more like Nola was eating the baby and audiences were outraged.

The main appeal of this movie to critics was its exteriorization of inner feelings of rage. Nobody does that like Cronenberg.

reply

Nola was doing something similar to what animals do when they give birth, i.e. bite open the birth sac to free the baby and then lick it clean, not only to get the blood off of it, but to stimulate the baby's blood flow and breathing to get it to take it's first breaths. She wasn't eating it.

~~I have a unique Id~~

reply

Nola scared me a lot at the end. Just the look on her face with the blood on her mouth. She had just lost it.. scary stuff. That bit at the start where the first dwarf leaves its bloody hand prints on the stair rail. *beep* that *beep* I was scared! I just watched it before. And its late. WAHHH!

reply

it's a damn scary movie, the school scene, the staircase scene...:s But also when that brood lies dying on the floor in front of Frank ;/

Samantha Eggar is GREAT in this movie, as she always is (was? Haven't seen her around for ages).

reply

If Jimmy Saville had held the keys to that institution he would have crept in and had his way at that point

reply

The part where the monster-dwarf-children go to the school and kill the teacher freaked my ass out - and let me tell you why...

because it seemed to contradict what you expect in a normal horror film - it was daylight, at a school, kids were all around - you just wouldn't expect it. It's like, school always feels like such a structured, safe place, and having it invaded right before your eyes is just scary as hell.

reply

yeah, the part with the teacher scared the *beep* out of me.
i saw it for the first time when i was about ten, alone, in my basement.
now, i usually don't get afraid that easily but, 23 years later and i still have a hard time watching it alone.

CATCH 22 WILL SCREW WITH YOU!

I have to agree with paulthomasaltman, the bloody hand print scene, definitely.

I do agree that the teacher slaughter scene was very disturbing. Especcially since it happened in front of a group of Kindergarders. Poor kids.

I just saw a special double feature of this tonight, double billed with It's Alive. Perfect combination if you ask me.

reply

IMHO, none of what you all mention was truly frightening. Disturbing, yes. But, truly horrifying? Not for me. That distinction goes to the very end, when Nola reveals to the husband what she has become. That was totally unexpected and disturbing, and very gross. This was the first time I've seen the film, and I never want to see that actress ever again. She's got a horrible taint. ;)

As a sidenote, I was disappointed that Cronenberg didn't delve further into the details about the quack psychology of the doctor, which I guess was supposed to be similar to the quack therapies popular back then, like Dianetics/Scientology.

i watched this film when i was very young and its haunted me ever since. when the brood attack the teacher scene sticks out the most! the reaction on the childrens faces seems so real.

reply

I really enjoyed this flick. The scariest part for me was definately the bloody stairs scene. Made me jump 2 feet! Other disturbing part... outside the school where the dwarves are mixed in with the school kids. Gotta love those parkas and snowpants! Speaking of outerwear, the part in the cabin where the dwarves parkas are hung up on hooks on the wall...made me howl! So funny.

reply

Really ????? I was lmao in the scenes where a clone attacks Frank and Nola's Dad.

Definitely the scariest part for me was the entire scene where the Grandfather was alone in the house. You knew what was coming the whole time, but the way it built up was fantastic. I was expecting to see the kid around every corner. I thought it was great how the grandfather looks up above the stairs, just as the grandmother did before she got it and you automatically assume the kid will be there like it was before, but its not. The music, the shadows, the colors...Such suspense. Great film.

All of the attacks were pretty frekay when I first saw it. The first attack was scary as weel as engaging. When granny turns and sees the thing in that shot where you see the thing, but you don't had me saying what the *beep* is that? Then Hell breaks loose. Again a little later when the thing pops up behind the stairwell. THe second attack wasn't so scary. I think because it wasn't as built up so much as the prior attack. Later the infamous school attack. What made that scene interesting was when Frankie looks and sees two hooded kids on the swing. Very subtle. Then the attack. It was very well setup. As I said in the first attack. THe creature just snuck around then unleashed hell. Whereas this attack just had sneak out the girl and then just walk up calmly and then go to town.
