OK--was any official reason given for cutting 40 minutes out of the film

I read the book back in 1977 and saw the movie two years later and was shocked. They had a great cast but the plot was in shambles. Explanations for events that were in the book were completely left (or cut out) of the movie--especially the snuff film subplot. The released version was a mess--incomprehensible and just plain bad! Was any reason for cutting the film so drastically given?

Is there ever a truthful explanation of why a film is botched in post-production?

reply

No but you think a big-budget film with an all-star cast would be left alone. I'm really surprised the studio thought it was OK to release the film in its present condition. An uncut release on DVD/Blu-Ray would be nice but is unlikely to happen.

Many, many major films have been botched in post-production editing. Cukor's Bhowani Junction, The Chapman Report, and A Star Is Born, Minnelli's On a Clear Day You Can See Forever and Wilder's The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes are only four of them.
