What was that foamy powder stuff?

I couldn't figure it out. You know, that stuff that they would spit on in each other's hands? Yeah, that stuff...

In the book it's called fizz-powder and comes in woodruff (i dont know what that is) or raspberry flavor. It's supposed to be turned into a drink, like a carbonated kool-aid but as the scene where Oskar and Maria are spitting in each other's hands takes place in a place where they have no cups or water, they take to licking it from their hands, because of the tingle they start to put it other places....

The powder alone was pretty popular among children - pre-PopRocks and other such candy. I remember as a child eating Jello right out of the box, and others I knew ate Kool-aid powder. My own kids - growing up in the more "enlightened" 70s and 80s - would eat EmergenC straight out of the envelope.

Note that once they're off the beach, it would have been easy enough to add water, if that's what they wanted.

So my feeling is that the whole fizzy-drink obsession is part of Oskar's infantile way of expressing sexuality. And Maria plays along, letting him be her "child-lover" until he tries to replace her very real emotion of betrayal (and fear of pregnancy) with yet another dose of fizzy powder, at which time she's finally disgusted and slaps him.

Soda Powder - Turns to a softdrink when mixed with water.

The foamy stuff is called Brause. My husband who was born in Germany in 1943 tells me it was sold in packets and, when poured into water, it would fizz up and make a carbonated sweet drink. All though I was born in the U.S. and am much younger than my husband, we had a similar product here called Fizzies. They were in tablet form (like an Alka Seltzer tablet) and came in many flavors - orange, lime, grape, etc. You'd drop them in a glass of water and voila - you'd have a carbonated drink! When I watched Oskar and Maria playing with the Brause it reminded me of the time my older (and much stronger) sister shoved a Fizzie in my mouth and held my mouth shut. It was horrible and painful, especially when the foam started coming out my nose.

In Britain it's called sherbert.

When he first got out the packet of Brause I thought he had a packet of condoms.

If it was set in the seventies it would have been Space Dust.

if you don't know, you really should stop watching these high-brow movies.
