Most of the answers won't be found in the book since the movie deviated from it a great deal....

What's the answer to #26? Anybody?

reply

Can the answeres to these questions be found? Id love to know after watching this great movie again last night

reply

Why is there a difference between the Closed Captioning & the Sub-Titles?
CC is for people who are deaf or hard of hearing, so sounds need to be described. Subtitles are for people who do not understand the language or the accent (I had to watch the first three Harry Potter movies with the subtitles on because I could not understand the accent, for example) but do hear, so non-dialog sounds need no explanation.

I don't know all of them, but I can answer a few:

2) He was asking Alec what he thought he was doing, and telling him the horse's name was Shaitan, or "Satan." Not a good idea playing My Pretty Pony with a horse named Satan.

6) It was a sea urchin.

7) Seaweed has been a popular food in many cultures for thousands of years.

8) There was a glass pane between them and the snake.

9) Fire is not difficult to make, given supplies, time, and know-how. Alec seems like an energetic, outdoorsy kind of boy, and that's the kind of thing energetic, outdoorsy boys tend to learn.

10) Probably not, but it makes for a wonderful story. Actually, given how obsessively horse lineages have been manipulated throughout history, I suppose it's distantly possible. Unlikely, but possible.

11) It was seaweed in a turtle shell.

14) He was just hanging out, minding his own business, when suddenly a strange man carrying a large clattering metal object enters his yard. Given his shyness and aggression, is it any wonder he flipped?

15) Alec had been barreling around town all day, asking everyone he met if they had seen a big black horse. The guy probably heard about it from someone Alec asked. The guy is named Snoe, played by Clarence Muse.

16) Looks like a real owl to me.

17) Lots of people are named Jim, Neville, and Jim Neville. They're both common names. As for the one in this movie, I don't think so. During his broadcast, he mentioned being from Belmont, and looking up "Jim Neville Belmont" only brings up references to this book/movie.

19) George Monroe Woolf (May 31, 1910 – January 4, 1946) was a Canadian-born thoroughbred race horse jockey and the namesake of the annual jockey's award given by the United States Jockeys' Guild. (Wikipedia)

20) He was waiting awkwardly for a chance to tell his mother he was racing. People fiddle with random things when they're waiting awkwardly.

22) Even though jockeys are supposed to be small and light, they have to maintain at least a minimum weight in order to control their horses properly. The jockey was two pounds underweight, so the other guy gave him some weights, which probably got clipped onto his saddle or something. (At least, that was my interpretation; I could be wildly off base here.)

25) It's possible to pass the same spot twice during a race because the track is circular. Duh.

27) The Black was frightened and aggressive; the red horse sensed his fear, got scared himself, and lashed out. This was probably done with extensive training to get them to act aggressively without actually fighting, and selective camera work to make it look more substantial than it really was. ("A tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.")

28) Yeah, probably, but in the heat of the moment, you don't really think about things like that.

29) The guy screwed up. Maybe that's why he lost.

30) Okay, so she left lipstick on his face. So? These things happen when people insist on spreading artificial, pointless, brightly colored substances on parts of the body used to touch other people.

reply

Thank you VERY much for the answers to a LOT of these!

As to number 25, I REALLY didn't see it as a "Duh.". My reference was to "At 2 miles, they'll come by the stands twice." At 2 MILES? Isn't a race track longer than a mile? In order to pass by TWICE, wouldn't they have to go MORE than a mile? THAT is to what I was referring.

Eight divided by one-half equals four squared!

reply

I suppose it depends on the racetrack, but in this particular case, the fact that they're gonna pass the stands twice in a two-mile race kinda speaks for itself.

3. in the book, lightning.

10. No, Bucephalus is not mentioned in the book at all.

12. Alec Ramsey lives in New York City, he was visiting his Uncle in Arabia.

17. no, Jim Neville is made up

19. Yes, George "The Iceman" Wolfe is absolutely real. He is a Hall of Fame jockey.

21. If I remember correctly Belmont Park, might have been Aqueduct or Jamaica all tracks in NYC. My book is in the attic so I can't check.

22. Clerk of the Course. His job is to make sure the horses are carrying the correct weight. In all races horses are assigned weights. For example, all horses in the Kentucky Derby carry 126 lbs except fillies carry 121. In handicap races horses are assigned weights by the track according to their ability. The idea is to get them all to the finish at the same time. The better the horse, the higher the weight. If the horse has to carry more than the jockey and saddle weighs then lead bars are inserted into pockets that are in the saddle cloth. Most jockeys weigh about 115 which is ridiculous for an adult that has to be in such good physical shape. They, sadly, starve, purge and take drugs to try to keep their weight down. Weights are higher in other countries. They weigh before and after each race. If their weight is wrong, the winner will be disqualified....

I don't recall the detail from the books and I didn't see this film, but 2 miles would be a very long race by modern thoroughbred standards. The current lengths of the U.S. Triple Crown races are 1 1/4 mile for the Kentucky Derby; 1 3/16 mile for the Preakness; and 1 1/2 mile for the Belmont Stakes. The main track at Belmont Park is supposed to be the largest dirt track in North America, and its circumference is 1 1/2 miles. Thus, the Belmont Stakes would not have the horses running past any particular points twice. Churchill Downs' track is only 1 mile in circumference, so the horses pass the "finish" post twice - the first time shortly after the race starts, and again at the end of the race, because the track is 1/4 mile shorter than the length of the race.

reply

The race itself was held at Belmont Park. I'd recognize it anywhere. Actually a lot of race tracks are a mile to a mile and a half long (can't remember off the top of my head the exact distance of Belmont Track but the Belmont Stakes is one and one-half miles and I do believe they pass the stands, or a portion of them, twice). So at two miles at Belmont, they would indeed pass the stands twice, because they went around the track about two times.

reply

Isn't a race track longer than a mile?

In North America most dirt tracks are either one mile or 1-1/8 miles. Very few (Belmont is an exception) have dirt tracks longer than 9 furlongs, although there are many (lower level tracks, mostly) that are less than 1 mile. The track filmed for this movie, Woodbine, had (at the time this was filmed) a dirt oval that is exactly 1 mile in circumference.
eta: it was actually filmed at Fort Erie track in Canada, my mistake. The track is a 1 mile oval there too though.

> 15) Alec had been barreling around town all day, asking everyone he met if they had seen a big black horse. The guy probably heard about it from someone Alec asked. The guy is named Snoe, played by Clarence Muse.

The guy lived on the same farm as Henry, maybe even worked for him, or at least lived nearby. He must have seen Henry trying to get The Black into his barn.

reply

>7) Seaweed has been a popular food in many cultures for thousands of years.

And when you get hungry enough, you'll try to eat anything that looks the least bit nourishing. As a naturist recently observed on the radio, if it tastes good, it probably is good. If it tastes bad, it probably is not good to eat.
Fruits, especially, evolved to be eaten by animals. That is how the seeds spread.

#3. What caused the fire on that ship?
The stage crew :]

#4. How did production keep Cass-Ole' ("Black") from being terrified by the noise of the people, the water & the fire?
He was terrified. Thus all of the screaming and rearing.

#6. After the thunderstorm on the island, what was that CUTE spiny creature crawling on the rock?
My guess would be a sea urchin. Definitely not cute tho.

#7. How did Alec know what seaweed was safe to eat?
It's green and leafy like the stuff his mom always tried to get him to eat. Plus he was desperate.

#8. How did production keep the cobra from striking Kelly Reno, or Cass-Ole' ("Black")?
There was glass separating them.

#10. Do you think the "Black" is a descendant of Bucephalus?
No. The Black was an Arabian. Bucephalus was a Thessalian.

#11. What was that that Alec offered to the "Black", & in what did he offer it? It LOOKS like a turtle shell.
I thought it was a turtle shell full of dried seaweed.

#14. Why did the "Black" go after the garbageman?
To protect Alec from them. Plus the first guy had that strap across his forehead which kind of made him look like the Black's original owner (the man on the ship with the turban if I remember correctly)

#19. Is George "The Iceman" Wolf real? Or was he made up for the movie?
He's real.

#20. When Alec showed his mom the newspaper about "Mystery Horse to Run", why did he shake the curtain?
To signal to Henry to come to the door.

#21. Where was the race held?
Belmont (again, if I remember correctly)

#22. When the riders are standing on the scale, why does the guy sitting (Who IS he? What is his job?) tell the other guy (Who IS he? What is his job?) to add pounds? Where do the pounds go?
He had to add pounds to the saddle to make every horse carry the same amount of weight during the race. I believe it's called handicapping?

#25. The announcer said, "At 2 miles, they'll come by the stands twice." How is it possible to pass by the stands twice during a race?
The starting gate/finish line would have to be past the stands. Then they'd make 2 laps, thus passing the stands twice.

#27. Why did that horse (Who was it?) attack the "Black"? How did production do this?
In the movie, it was probably bc they were both stallions fighting over territory.

#28. When Alec throws off his hat & goggles, doesn't that present a problem for the horses to trip? Couldn't Alec be disqualified for this?
It's a movie.

#29. As the "Black" gained on the 2nd racer, the racer looked over his shoulder. Isn't he supposed to look under his arm to keep his balance?
It's a movie.

#30. Did anyone else notice that when Alec's mom kissed him, she left a HUGE lip-stick print on his face?
Haha yea.

#31. Where can I see Cass-Ole's biography?

reply

#3. I was talking about in the movie, not on the set.

#6. Ah. Sea urchin. {I} thought it was cute! :o)

#8. Oh, YEAH! I saw the glass THIS time! THANK you!

#10. OH! THANK you! I didn't know Bucephalus was Thessalian!

#14. Oh, YEAH! It DOES make him look like his original owner!

#20. O.K.! NOW I get that part!

#22. THAT makes sense. That all the horses would have to carry the same weight.

Thank you VERY much for the questions you answered, & made it clearer, thus enabling me to enjoy the movie more!

#21 - The race is held at Santa Anita in California

What is YOUR final destination in this journey through life?

reply

Actually, in a stakes race (and most match races) all horses must carry the same weight. Lead bars are added to increase weight if the jockey and tack are too light. In a "handicap" race, horses carry weight depending on their success on the racetrack. One of the most successful handicap winners was Forego, who by the time he retired at age 8 or 9, was carrying ridiculous amounts of weight (as much as 145; stakes horses usually carry 120 or less).

#1. OH! I didn't know RECTANGULAR ones were made! Thanks. I think of the two you suggested, a well trained horse would be more likely. I don't think they would chance a horse eating glue.

#7. WHAT?!? There was a BOOK of "The Black Stallion"?!? Library trip later! Thanks!

#15. WOW! You are a WEALTH of information! Thanks!

#24.(?) #25.(?) Did you MEAN to answer numbers 22, & 24 (respectfully), but typed out #24 & 25?

Well, THANK you SO much for the information!

#1.) OH! "Sugar Glue"! THAT would be better! Oh! I REMEMBER those CUTE Easter Egg Scenes! They were SO cute!

#8.) Yes, I think that a rubber snake would have been used for the stomping, else they would have been at the mercy of the ASPCA

#28.) OH! I didn't know that whips were dropped occasionally! Whoa! FIVE goggles? Wouldn't that be more weight on the horse? Or wouldn't it weigh enough to matter? It's true what they say: "You learn something new every day."

You are ABSOLUTELY right! It DOESN'T look like the figurine used in the movie! It's HIGHWAY ROBBERY! Finding out who has the ORIGINAL figurine would be SO cool! I hope I'm not a bother for asking these questions, & replying to the answers. You are VERY kind for putting up with me!

{SIGH!} SO many people tell me I have a lot of time on my hands. I am disabled. I have 4 mental disabilities & an enlarged heart. I am on the Internet a LOT. I like watching & critiquing movies. I would rather be doing this than other things that people do with their free time.

#2.) Ah. I never knew The Black's real name. Thanks.
#3.) That was a bummer that the boiler exploded, causing all that loss. (People & Property)
#4.) Cool. Corky Randall was a GREAT trainer!
#6.) "Alec was in the Boy Scouts." That's what the cute spiny creature was?
#7.) A pane of glass separated Kelly Reno from the seaweed?
#8.) A boy scout kept the cobra from striking Alec?

WAIT a minute. I have to re-read your answers & my questions. I just realized you're answering the wrong questions.

#15.) GREAT! I'll be doing a bit of research on Clarence Muse
#17.) I asked two questions. "no" to which?
#19.) Again, I asked two questions. "yes" to which?
#26.) LOL! Dorks mess up both, actually. You should watch "Price is Right" with them. VERY confusing.
#27.) O.k...why did Sunraider attack Shetan?
#28.) Ah! I didn't know about "Match Races".
#31.) Aw! That's too bad. I hope he lived a LONG, happy, healthy life.

Well, thank you for taking the time to answer a few of my questions. I did learn a few things from you. I appreciate it!

I'd think that if three of them were real sugar cubes, and the other was something like sytrofoam or a little block of wood painted white, the horse would not eat it.
