okay, when alec comes home he and his mom dont seem the least bit broke up about his dad dying in the shipwreck, they just kind of pretend it never happened. why is this?

Alec has been shipwrecked on the Island for ages, they both had time to grieve. He has found comfort in The Black. The mother thought she had lost both of them, so when Alec returns, I guess she just had good news, right?
There are moments when they remember the father, Alec goes to his closet and looks through his things, plays with the watch, tries on the gloves...

They certainly didn't over play it, but on the kid's first night home, he goes out in the back yard to be near the horse (plus he had been sleeping outside for a good while after the shipwreck). His mom takes a blanket out to him and thanks the horse for saving him, then adds that she wishes he had saved her husband, too. Plus the kid was obviously devastated as the ship was sinking and he cried when he finally got to the beach.

reply

Because they both read the book and knew what really happened.

reply

Cause the father wasn't even in the book....

reply

Yes he was. He just wasn't on the ship.

reply

Because that didn't happen in the book, and the screenwriter had no idea how to add that without bogging the story down even more than it already was, by having an unnecessary death in it.

reply

Because it's been a long time. They've probably discussed it off-camera.
