What year is the movie supposed to be set in?

Does it specify anywhere?

Hi, BaaBaa. My guess is post-war, say '47 or '48, based on the cars and the clothes. I read the books in the '50s.

What's funny is, when I went to see Seabiscuit I was shocked that they were "stealing" something from "The Black Stallion," but quickly realized it was the other way around, TBS's career was partially based on Seabiscuit's career. Seabiscuit, it says here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seabiscuit, was at his height between '36 and '40.

1946--there is an explanatory title just after the credits locating the ship as sailing off the coast of North Africa in 1946.

And a newspaper that Teri Garr is looking at later in the film is also dated 1946.
