Truly the cheesiest Disney movie ever made

The sets, special effects, the acting, production values, everything, bad, bad, bad. Looks like it was made by a high school stage production. A real disappointment, considering it was a Disney project with first rate actors. Disney is known for it's innovative productions. But I'm guessing this mess was thrown together in an effort to cash in on the Star Wars phenomenon, released just a couple of years earlier. It just never should have been made. It spoiled the Disney reputation.

It spoiled the Disney reputation.

This doesn't even make sense.

You evidently don't remember the film fondly and that's whatever. It's too bad that the picture didn't do it for you. Disney's reputation wasn't even dented by this film, so I'm not sure what you're talking about there.

You're saying that this film is no better than some of the other dreck that was made to "cash in on the SW phenomenon?" I disagree. It was definitely a film aimed at the sci-fi crowd who made "Star Wars" such a success but it certainly wasn't as bad as you make it out to be. There were definitely absurd moments but this film's heart was in the right place, even if the execution could've been better.

5.9/10 Not exactly a Disney classic.

reply

No one said it was a classic, ergo, your response is a pointlessly stupid one. You overreact in your OP, relying on hyperbole which holds no real water. Everything you say is exaggerated. The film in no way hurt the studio's reputation. It was nothing more than a flawed film that won an Academy Award nomination for it's visual effects alongside Star Trek The Motion Picture and ALIEN. But hey, some jerk on the internet says it looks like a high school stage production, so it must be true. Get lost, you over-reacting dumbass.

Whose idea was it for the word "Lisp" to have an "S" in it?

reply

Oh, I sorry, I wasn't aware critical opinions were not allowed on this site. Well it is my opinion nonetheless. And like a$$holes, everyone's got one. Only in your case, you're the a$$hole with an opinion.

reply

The "production values", "sets" and "special effects" were state-of the-art in 1979. The special effects were actually superior to those featured in Star Wars.

reply

No way. No one remembers the special effects of The Black Hole. Everybody remembers the effects of Star Wars and 2001 A Space Odyssey.

reply

That probably has to do with millions of more people have seen Star Wars and 2001...it doesn't change the fact that the special effects used in The Black Hole were more advanced and state-of-the-art. Try reading the info and trivia section on this board.

Still cheesy compared to Star Wars.

This is just nonsense on it's face.

1. The Black Hole was the pinnacle of old-school Hollywood effects.

2. You use the word "cheesiest", but I don't think that word means what you think it means.

You think The Black Hole is cheesier than:

The Herbie movies
Condorman
Mr. Boogedy
The Cat from Outer Space

Seriously...

Quien es mas macho?

Benedict Cumberbatch

O

Ricardo Montalban

I saw this movie in the theater in 1979 (I was about 15) and I recall being very bored by it....and very turned off about the fact that I could see the wires on the floating robots! I was told that in the DVD version the wires have been brushed out. I still consider this to be a Star Wars wannabe-cash in project!

Star Wars for old people who didn't understand, or enjoy, Star Wars. Also, why Disney was floundering around, losing money hand over fist until Eisner saved it a few years later.

WOW, really clever! That is the best you can come up with, fanboy?

BA HA HA HA HA HA! You must be the life of the party, but I don't suppose you get a lot of invites.

reply

I'm afraid the upcoming Star Wars films Disney may quickly change all this.

reply

I have the feeling Disney felt they needed something to match Star Wars with the merchandising, etc. Although I don't see the marketing of this movie in the same way Star Wars did.

If you watch Star Wars today it still comes across as a modern sci-fi movie. This film looks very dated to me. The dialog is pathetic and let's not even talk about the costumes and special effects. It's almost laughable ... Wait .. It is laughable.

reply

One thing for sure, The Black Hole ain't no Star Wars.

There's no more Hollywood anymore, there's just a bunch of banks
