What Part Of The Ship Did They Escape Out Of?

I don't have a clue as to how they ended up on the side of the boat.

I just watched this again for the first time in literally decades on Turner Classic Movies (I love that network), and I realized that the survivors must have escaped the Poseidon through a side-loading portal that allowed cars and other large pieces of equipment and cargo to be loaded onto and removed from the ship. Remember the swinging car that was suspended overhead (due to the inverted position) and smacking repeatedly into the side of the vessel?

This also lit a lightbulb within my skull with the realization that Harold Meredith, the blind man who didn't want to be a burden but who had to be guided every step of the way in the escape saved them all. It was Meredith who, using his heightened sense of hearing, realized that the car was hitting something other than a solid wall, and he told this to the others. That allowed Michael Caine to locate the door and, beyond that, the partially opened cargo entrance.

In a real way, the blind man led them to salvation. Steve V.

It was through a small pedestrian door from an upper deck, not through the hull.

Ahhh . . . but that hanging car was included in the scene for some important reason, and since they don't load cars onto ships through on-deck staircases, we'll stick with the side-loading heavy equipment doorway.

And we won't even think about the deck elevators or anything. 😁 Steve V.
