Are the rest this vomitable?

I mean, okay, the Nazis were (and the American Nazi Party is) practically begging to be satirized in a broad sense, but I have a parent who has worked with victims of pedophilia and incest, and it isn't funny.
But I want to know, since this is the first Meyer film I came across, if I should give him another chance. Are the others as evil?

reply

It's hard to me to say, because I find Russ Meyer's films extremely funny, not evil - no matter what the subject is.
But you could say that the rest of his movies are in same league. Supervixens and Up! includes some very vulgar (and in the same time funny) violence against women. Vixen! is the only Russ Meyer film (of those that I have seen) that isn't really that funny. It's more like simple exploitation flick. But it does include one incest-related scene.
Beneath the Valley of the Ultra-Vixens on other hand is simply funny and I don't recall that it includes any "evil" scenes. Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! is a legendary chick-flick and it's more like filled with attitude than humorous like other Russ Meyer movies.
My favourite Meyer-film is Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, which is the most professional film I have seen directed by Russ Meyer. It does include some pretty brutal scenes but I wouldn't say it's evil.

So, yes, I think you should give him another change and try to watch Meyer-movies open-minded because otherwise they would be REALLY hard to watch.

I'm a Meyer fan, so I guess I have a higher threshhold for this sort of thing. The only Meyer film that I don't like is SUPERVIXENS, I didn't find too many likable characters in that one. Most of his films from the Sixties are pretty violent, but the level of violence is at such a cartoonish level, that you can't help but not take it seriously. But, for the most part, the evil people get punished in his films. ULTRA-VIXENS is my personal favorite, doesn't have too much violence and has moments that are very erotic. Especially after Lamarr gets his problem "solved". Remember, don't take these too seriously, and you might enjoy them more.

@OlliK: Vixen isn`t the only RM movie with an incest (and kinda pedophilia) scene. At the end of Ultravixens we see 14 year old red Rhett humping his mother (maybe stepmother, but who knows?).

What scene in VIXEN suggested pedophilia?

I think he/she is confusing paedophilia for incest.
Hey Tresix, do you think we'll ever find Ann Marie or Ken Kerr?

reply

There was no pedophilia on VIXEN, what I meant was that the boy having sex with his mother in ULTRAVIXENS was supposed to be 14 years old (the actor was of course much older).

Geej! Are some of the dates/times messed up on this comment board, or did it REALLY take you guys nearly FOUR YEARS to have the simple "conversation" above?

Man-o-man! And here I thought this MOVIE was slow!!! I guess everything is relative, huh?

Seriously, I think Ultra-Vixens is hilarious, and it's definitely my #1 pick among the Meyer flicks, at least in the "guilty pleasures" department -- but I absolutely cannot BELIEVE that its running time is only 93 minutes! I can still remember how the first time I saw it, back around 1985 or thereabouts, it seemed to go on FOREVER... like one o' them 3-hour epics or somethin'!!! (Alternate title coulda been "Rump Friction" or "Meet Joe Backdoor" or maybe even "Lord of the Puckered Brown Ring")

Vixen! not funny?

Come on Vixen was extremely funny and enjoyable to watch (incest scene and all).

This reaction is quite understandable. However, the violence and sexual perversion quotient is only this high on Russ' last three films (this one, plus Up and Supervixens) with this being the most intense.

You have to have a deep love for a) satire and b)large breasts to be able to put up with the "evil" as you call it. I had a great appreciation for a) and b) but still found the films hard to take when I was in my late teens. After digging deeper and understanding a little more about how "dead on" the satire is, and what a unique piece of film-making it is, my estimation of the films went higher as I rewatched them.

If you can re-watch This film great. If not, I'd immerse myself in Meyer films from 1959 on so you get some perspective on his film-making before you re-watch this one. Caution, though. If you don't like breasts these movies will be hard to watch. IO have found that breastophobes and homosexuals have to be *major* satire fans to sit through his stuff (e.g. John Waters, a major RM fan.)

I don't see the violence being that intense in this movie. Not by a longshot. This was the first Meyer movie I ever saw and was quite shocked when I went back to see the rest of his work. In fact, I initially didn't like Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, Faster, Pussycat!…, and Supervixens. The last one is still the only Meyer movie that I just don't like.
