There's finally a 2 disc release from Spain... anyone have that?

reply

Yes - really terrible quality: it's like a poor dupe of an old video tape. Disc one is the uncut version and disc two the cut version. Both are widescreen with English or Spanish soundtracks but no extras.

"Security - release the badgers."

reply

well that's rather disconcerting... I was hoping at least ONE of the two version would look fine.... darn...
But thanks for giving us the scoop. :)

reply

Available only in Europe, apparently! Couldn't find a region 1 or 4!

Prostitute: What the *beep* are you doing?
Johnny: I'm gonna kill a bunch of people.

Bear Island has been released by Sony in their "British Classics" (!) series on catalogue number CDR10122. This is a region 2/4 PAL disc and the running time, allowing for the 4% PAL speed up, is equivalent to the 118m version. It is anamorphic widescreen 2.35:1 and the sleeve claims that it "has been extensively remastered and restored". Unfortunately, picture quality is merely adequate and the sound is mono, whereas the film was recorded in Dolby Stereo.

reply

extensively remastered and restored on a $50 budget.

the only way to get your hands on this film in the US is via "other means" and it's totally worth it, a fun movie to watch, and the quality is better than VHS and as good as any lame DVD transfer is these days. It's not high def. But the mountains and snow sometimes look sparkling sharp.
