What is the best Frank Zappa song and/or album

What is the best Frank Zappa song and/or album. I like the album "Shiek yerbouti" but i like the song "Wowie Zowie" from "frak Out!"

This is glue. Strong stuff. - Elwood Blues of The Blues Brothers

"Shiek yerbouti" is my fav too, anything he did with Terry Bozzio is great, oh yea, can't forget Hot Rats.

"Live In New York" is a really good album, "Naval Aviation In Art?" and "Lil' Clanton Shuffle" are both excellent...

Zoot Allures, 200 Motels, Joe's Garage, & Broadway the Hard Way are some of my favorite albums of all time...but then I can't think of a thing he did that I didn't find brilliant. Songs, impossible to choose, unless it's just for the day, because I'll have 35 different favorites again tomorrow. Right now I'm listening to "Black Napkins", but have "The Torture Never Stops", and "Diamond Dogs, Live" in queue...

yikes, don't get me started :-)

Gotta go with Tom1986 on this one. I could (and do) listen to "Willie The Pimp" and "The Gumbo Variations" over and over and over...never get tired of 'em. Also have to give a shout out to "Watermelon In Easter Hay" from Joe's Garage Act III...a stunningly beautiful piece.

Zappa has many great albums but at the head of the pack is Apostrophe, Hot Rats, Grand Wazo, One Size Fits All, and Roxy Saint Elsewhere. Those are definetly his best albums. Plus its a great mix of his ability to perform all sorts of music.

reply

That should be Roxy AND Elsewhere. I think you must have been thinking of the TV show

reply

wow it's amazing (11 years later) to find someone who knows the "best" album! CIV III it is! cool ...

reply

One of the many great things about Zappa is you can listen to one of his songs and hear something different each time. I think there is nothing better than the guitar solo on Inca Roads, but as for an album, I think I'd have to put Roxy and Elsewhere at the top right now. It boggles my mind to think that all those notes were played and sung by humans in one take, live! Imagine today's top groups going on tour with material like that!

I bet if you took a poll of music fans' favorite album or song by an artist, none would have a wider variety or broader range than FZ -- that is to say no two Zappa fans seem to like the same songs or album.

reply

I listen to Carolina Hardcore Ecstasy and Dumb All Over almost daily they're just brilliant as well as the albums as well. "You are what you is" and "Bong Fury w/Captn' Beefhart" amazing.

the american cinematheque in los angeles is playing baby snakes two times!!!

Once on the 17th of August at the Egyptian and in Hollywood and then again at the Aero in Santa monica on the 31st of august. You can fandango the theaters and preorder tickets or get there early. show do sell out through pre sales there. I've been burned a few times.

I almost forgot, Gail Zappa will be at both shows for some question and answers. Both theaters have AWESOME sound. trust me on this.

and get this I've been emailing the cinematheque and they are planning a Zappa film tribute for sometime in 2007! Gail is working on this with them.

too cool.
