Was Kurtz conducting reconnaissance on the PBR boat before they arrived at his compound?

I have always got the impression that Kurtz knew about the PBR boat/Willard heading his way. I mean, yes, he clearly knew that the brass from Nha Trang would be sending somebody else after him (especially after Colby), but I feel like he had his forces conducting recon on Willard starting at somepoint either past the Du Long bridge or the French Plantation.

Thoughts?

Kurtz probably got a word when the natives attack their boat and shot sticks at them.

For me, there's no French plantation, because there's only the 1979 theatrical cut.

Kurtz knew of the mission. Willard said his mission was classified. Then Kurtz asked if he still planned to 'terminate his command' and if his method's were 'unsound' quoting the General's outlining of Willard's mission at the movie start verbatim hence the mission was no longer 'classified' in fact.

I disagree, yes Kurtz says a portion of what you posted (Willard asserts the unsound part, not Kurtz) but remember, Willard is not the first soldier sent to assassinate Kurtz, Colby was sent on the same mission. Any soldier sent thereafter is reasonably there to terminate the Colonel’s command.
Kurtz is a brilliant tactician, it probably took him a whopping one second to deduce why Willard was there.

Well put, lol.

It is a grey area but Kurtz was strong in intelligence ( ex he knew of the double agents in the SVA) so he could have had informants in the US army.

The General says that Kurtz's methods are ' unsound' to Willard.

In the scene w Kurtz, actually the dialogue is : Kurtz " Do you think my methods are 'unsound' ( quoting the General again coincidentally).
Willard " I don't seen any method at all"

Kurtz then pondered what Willard should do now that his mission was no longer classified ( ie maybe Kurtz knew something about it)

But I see your pt that It could be he knew all this from Colby (same dialogue w the General perhaps) if he had the same mission so I could be wrong. Interesting debate either way.
